BASEBALL: Team earns 4 of 6 MAC specialty awards

After being voted the No. 26 team in the nation in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Poll, the Ball State baseball team was again recognized for its strong regular season by dominating the Mid-American Conference’s postseason awards.

BASEBALL: Cardinals finish season with sweep

The Ball State baseball team ended its 2014 regular season today with a 10-2 victory at Northern Illinois.With the win, the Cardinals finished the year 38-16 overall, while boasting a 22-4 mark inside the Mid-American Conference.Clay Manering got the start for Ball State, and the senior southpaw went five innings, allowing one run on five hits to earn his third win of the season.Catcher Jarret Rindfleisch opened the scoring for the Cardinals with a RBI double in the top of the first inning, and a throwing error on the Huskies in the third led to three more Cardinal runs.After the Huskies posted the team's first run of the game on a RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals answered with an Alex Maloney two-run triple in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-1.Back-to-back RBI singles from Nick Hollowell and Alex Call in the seventh extended Ball State’s lead to 8-1, and Matt Eppers added to the onslaught with a two RBI double to make the score 10-1.A bottom of the ninth-inning home run by the Huskies cut the score to 10-2, but it was as close as the team would get, as the Cardinals held on for the sweep.The Cardinals will open MAC Tournament play

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State adds Youngstown State transfer

After losing four players to graduation and another two to transfer, the Ball State men’s basketball team is adding a player to the roster.Forward Ryan Weber is transferring from Youngstown State to play at Ball State.Weber was a sophomore last season and will redshirt for his mandatory one-year sit out period, leaving him two years of eligibility with the Cardinals.Weber was a major contributor last season with the Penguins, starting 28 games and averaging 33 minutes per game.“Ryan had a great season at Youngstown State and has proven he can produce at a high level in college,” Ball State head coach James Whitford said in a press release.

FOOTBALL: 2 Ball State players drafted into NFL

For the first time since 2009, a Ball State player’s name was called in the NFL Draft.The Indianapolis Colts selected former Ball State defensive end Jonathan Newsome in the fifth round.One round later, record-setting quarterback Keith Wenning was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens with the 18th pick.NEWSOMEAfter transferring from Ohio State, Newsome played in 23 games during his two seasons at Ball State, accumulating 116 total tackles, 16.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

SOFTBALL: Perry, team win postseason awards

Under first-year head coach Tyra Perry, the 2014 Ball State softball team went 33-19 and continued to establish itself as a prominent Midwest softball program.However, the team lost in the Mid-American Conference Tournament to Northern Illinois on Friday.Perry, who previously served as the head coach at Western Kentucky for six seasons, was named the conference coach of the year by her peers.“To have that type of respect from such a great group of women was amazing,” she said.
