INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A person with knowledge of the injury tells The Associated Press that Colts linebackerRobert Mathis is expected to miss the entire season after tearing an Achilles tendon during a private workout last week in Atlanta.The person spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because the team had not confirmed Mathis' injury.Mathis began a four-game suspension on Aug.

ATHLETICS: NCAA lifts sanctions against Penn State

The NCAA has lifted the on-the-field sanctions placed on the Penn State football team for the Jerry Sandusky scandal, including immediately eliminating the postseason ban and restoring scholarships.Penn State was halfway through a four-year postseason ban handed down during the summer of 2012.

Students react to Ray Rice suspension

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Ray Rice was let go by the Baltimore Ravens on Monday and suspended indefinitely by the NFL after a video was released that appears to show the running back striking his then-fiancee in February.The grainy video, released by TMZ Sports, apparently shows Rice and Janay Palmer in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino.

FOOTBALL: Passing game falls short in loss to Iowa

On the ground or through the air, the offense for the Ball State football team struggled against Iowa.Leading 13-10 with less than three minutes to go, Ball State running back Jahwan Edwards took two handoffs, the first to the right and the second to the left, going for a combined negative one yard.On third down, quarterback Ozzie Mann’s pass flew far to receiver Jordan Williams’s right, who was creating separation and had room for a first down if the pass was on target.The drive stalled, and Iowa would go on to score the game winning touchdown.

The Ball State football team was less than three minutes away from another win against a school in a power conference during the Pete Lembo era.Less than three minutes away from being 3-0 against the Big Ten over the last four seasons.Less than three minutes away from a potential momentum-churning win to start the 2014 season.Ball State fell 17-13 to Iowa Saturday afternoon, at Kinnick Stadium.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cardinals start season with 3 straight wins

For the first time in seven years, the Ball State field hockey team has won three straight matches after defeating Colgate 2-1 on Saturday.Coach Beth Maddox, whose team moved to 3-0 on the year, said the contest was in no way pretty, but it was hard fought and the team was happy to come out with a win.
