Roll's 'epiphany' gives Ball State a win against Buffalo

Ball State midfielder Lauren Roll had a smile on her face as her teammates heckled her with "Roll sucks" chants. But her teammates know Roll doesn't suck, especially after her goal helped the Cardinals win their Mid-American Conference opener against Buffalo 1-0.

This weekend, football hits the road for its final non-conference game, while soccer, volleyball and field hockey each begin Mid-American Conference play.

Cardinal soccer defense leads team effort to defend MAC title

Ball State soccer is about to start its bid to defend last season's regular-season Mid-American Conference title. After a 5-2-1 start to the season, The Cardinals open conference play against Buffalo (3-3-1) Friday. Head coach Craig Roberts said the MAC has improved in recent years. “I think the MAC continues to increase in ability level," he said.

'Finding Dory' to be shown at Scheumann Stadium

Following the soccer game against Buffalo Sept. 23, Ball State fans will just keep swimming to Scheumann Stadium for a screening of Finding Dory. Shawn Sullivan, assistant athletics director for marketing and fan engagement, said that the athletics department has been looking to tie in more promotions such as this to some of the sports that don’t get as much attention.

Weekend in Review

Ball State Field hockey (4-4) went 0-2 this weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, losing against No. 15 Iowa (6-2), 1-4, and No. 4 Penn State (8-0), 0-7. The Cardinals got off to a good start against Iowa, taking the lead in the first half, 1-0, via a goal by senior midfielder Mikayla Mooney, her third of the season.

Most Ball State athletics teams spent the last couple weeks on the road, but Family Weekend will feature home games from football, women's volleyball and soccer. Cross country and field hockey, however, will hit the road again.

Goalkeepers perform well, compete for time

Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel started all 20 of the Cardinals' soccer games last season, leading the team to the Mid-American Conference regular season title. But it wasn't enough to keep head coach Craig Roberts from bringing in Tristin Stuteville, a junior transfer from Saint Louis University.

Ball State Athletics: Weekend in review

Labor Day weekend meant long road trips for Ball State athletics. Football went down to Georgia and beat Georgia State 31-21 in its season opener. Cross country finished third in the Butler Open in Carmel. Field hockey split its games in Louisville, soccer dropped two games in its California road trip and women's volleyball fell to 0-7 on the season.

Athletics faces busy weekend

With the first week of classes underway, three Ball State athletic teams will compete this weekend. Soccer will play at home against Xavier Aug. 26 and Fort Wayne on Aug. 28. Field hockey opens its season with a pair of games in North Carolina against Appalachian State Aug. 26 and Davidson Aug. 28. Women’s volleyball kicks off its season with three games at the Fort Wayne Invitational beginning Aug. 26.
