SOCCER: Cardinals' goalkeeper suffers injury during Friday's game

Although the Ball State University women's soccer team was 1-1 this weekend, it actually suffered two losses. Ball State (2-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) lost to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro 1-0 Sunday and defeated Florida Atlantic University 2-1 Friday at the FAU Kickoff Classic.

MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals in fifth after 36 holes

The Ball State University men's golf team teed off their fall season Monday at the Piper Intercollegiate in Bowling Green, Ohio. After 36 holes, Ball State is in fifth place out of 15 teams. Junior Andrew Rhodes leads the Cardinals with a score of 68 from the second round.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BSU tries to stop skid

The next chance for the Ball State women's volleyball team to snap its school-record seven-match losing streak comes today in Indianapolis against IUPUI. The Cardinals are 1-7 on the season, marking the worst start in Ball State history, and most recently lost both home matches in the Ball State Classic this past weekend.

Ball State University's field hockey team didn't come out on top Saturday, but the team said they believed the result marks major progress in their final non-conference game before the Mid-American Conference season begins. No. 19 Indiana University defeated Ball State 2-0 "Today was a turning point," forward Brooke MacGillivary said.

FOOTBALL: Linebacker wins MAC Player of the Week

Two days after recording 12 tackles in a 38-16 win at Eastern Michigan, Ball State University linebacker Bryant Haines was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday. Haines' 12 tackles led a defense that limited the Eagles to 252 yards offensively and a single offensive touchdown.

Police find military training grenade near campus apartments

A training grenade was found Sunday near Ball State University's Scheidler Apartments, but there was no information about how it got there, Bob Fey, deputy chief of the University Police Department, said. Fey said this was not the first time a military device has been found on campus.

SPEAK SOFTLY: Money should be distributed more evenly

Last week, Ball State University had quite a scare when an elevator got stuck in the Brayton/Clevenger residence halls of the LaFollette Complex. An overheated motor left seven people, one of whom was four months pregnant, trapped in an elevator for approximately two hours.

OBJECTIONABLE MATERIAL: Muncie reflects country-wide poverty issue

Shame on us and our supposedly "great nation." According to an Aug. 30 article in "The Star Press," one-third of Muncie lives in poverty. Muncie ranks ninth among the top 10 most impoverished cities in the country with populations greater than 65,000. The list also includes Gary and Bloomington.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Historic struggles continue for Cards

The Ball State University women's volleyball team lost two matches this weekend and in the process tied a school record. Having lost its last seven matches the Cardinals tied the school's longest losing streak and are now off to their worst start, 1-7, in the program's 35-year history.

Students gather in a small Irving Gym classroom early Tuesday morning as Professor Emeritus Ya'akov Eden writes Country Walkin', Electric Slide and Rebel Strut on a movable dry erase board. Ball State University students and faculty were dancing to the sounds of Christian rock music in Pruis Hall Thursday night. Kevin Dubois, campus pastor of Touch of Fire Ministries, said the organization invited Christian recording artist Josh Bates to perform.

Letterman returns to BSU; Building to be named after 'Late Show' host

When it came to the naming of the new communications and media building, Ball State President Jo Ann Gora and the Board of Trustees had little difficulty deciding who it should be named after. The problem was getting 1970 Ball State alumnus and TV legend David Letterman to accept the honor.

Kevin Burke, director of university communications said security concerns have kept details of Letterman's visit largely unavailable to the media. "At the same time," Burke said, "we anticipate that it'll be a fairly low-key security approach. People will be respectful.

WHO, ME?: New Charlie just creepy

Despite a record student attendance at the Ball State University football game Aug. 30, I didn't see the one person I most wanted to see inside the stadium. Almost eight thousand students, and fat Charlie Cardinal did not make it inside. I thought things may have changed back to the way I once knew when I saw him wandering around the outside of the stadium, saying hi to spectators and high-fiving students.
