Bed races to be at noon today

Ball State University students will have the chance to race down Riverside Avenue in unusual costumes as part of the Homecoming bed races. Registration for the races begins at 11 a.m. where the Homecoming Steering Committee will offer free Monster Energy drinks and Student Government Association will offer free pizza.

Ball State releases annual crime report

Ball State University released its crime statistics and annual report to the public Thursday. David Fried, director of students right and community standards, said students can access the report at the Web site bsu.edu/sa/srcs/securityreport. Fried said the report has two purposes: to help the university decide where it needs to make security improvements and to inform students, faculty and staff about crimes in the area and services available to them.

FOOTBALL: Season recap

Miami of Ohio A record number of students, 7,885, watched Ball State lose its first game in the newly-renovated Scheumann Stadium to Miami 14-13. The RedHawks took the lead following a six-yard touchdown run by running back Brandon Murphy with 17 seconds remaining.

Stadium renovations save money for BSU

When Ball State University decided to replace Scheumann Stadium's natural grass field with synthetic turf, it meant no more countless hours of painting, primping and priming usually required to maintain grass. Phil Clay, manager of operations for the department of athletics, was responsible for that work load.

When Ball State University football players took the field Oct. 6, they weren't worried about the empty seats that remained in the student section. Almost as if it were a tradition, Cardinals' players expect their fans to continue to walk into Scheumann Stadium through the first couple minutes of the game.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals remove players from team

Two players were dismissed from the Ball State University men's basketball team Thursday. Guard Jarelle Redden and center Micah Rollin were removed from the team for violating team policy in separate instances, according to press release. Both seniors transferred to Ball State before last season.

Body art shows support

Four men with "BSU!" painted on their bodies in large red and white letters had front row seats at Scheumann's Stadium Oct. 6. During the football game against Central Michigan University, the four men: Dan Martin, Chris Phillips, Anthony Maurer and Richard Babcock, were completely absorbed in the game and attempted to rouse the rest of the crowd.

FOOTBALL: Davis growing as QB

Slightly more than 10 minutes after the biggest game of Nate Davis' career had kicked off, the true freshman stepped under center with his team trailing the University of Michigan by a touchdown in front of 109,359 fans at Michigan Stadium. Davis took the snap, dropped back three steps and delivered a 13-yard pass to receiver Dante Love.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Team at MAC mid-point

With two Mid-American Conference matches this weekend the Ball State University women's volleyball team will end the weekend having played exactly half of its MAC season. The team will play Ohio University and Kent State University Friday and Saturday respectively.

Shortly before the curtains parted at the 20th-annual Air Jam, an announcement boomed from the speakers stating John R. Emen's Auditorium was at full capacity. Deafening screams and applause greeted this news, which was the same ruckus that greeted the various acts throughout the show and royalty coronation.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Roller raises women's basketball ticket sales, herself

A cold front arrived in Muncie at the wrong time for women's basketball coach Tracy Roller. With temperatures in the 40s and wearing two winter coats, Roller sat on a 25-foot high scissor lift near the intersection of McGalliard Road and Bethel Avenue for 12 hours Thursday as part of a promotion to sell 1,000 women's basketball season tickets.

'Deplorable' beating yields five arrests

Five women with Ball State University connections who are accused of beating another woman and bragging about it on Facebook all had bonded out of jail by Thursday night, jail officials said. Ball State students Kari Streib, Ashley Kirkman, Rene Whiteley and Alysse Popov were among those arrested, said Detective Jami Brown of the Muncie Police Department.

Daniels speaks at Republicans' annual dinner

At the Delaware County Republicans' annual Lincoln-Reagan dinner Wednesday night, Governor Mitch Daniels said it was important for college students to get involved in politics because they are often overlooked by government officials. "Young people have been underrepresented and there's too much tendency, I think, to fail to address their concerns," Daniels said.

Homecoming royalty

KingKyle Johnson Senior Kyle Johnson did not do any campaigning to become Ball State University's Homecoming King. "I was surprised and excited," Johnson said. "It's an honor to win." He said making the top 10 was a big shock for him, and he did not expect to go further.

OUR VIEW: Buy b-ball seats

In theory, the idea was a little nutty - camp out in the cold on a scissor lift next to a Ball State University billboard until 1,000 women's basketball season tickets are sold. That's more than twice as many sold last year's record-setting 407. In practice, however, the stunt seems to be working -¡- after one 12-hour day braving the chilly temperatures and wind, 200 tickets were sold, bringing the total to 530.

SOCCER: Cardinals try to extend record streak

The last time the Ball State University soccer team played a team from Illinois, it defeated Illinois State University 1-0. The shutout was the first of a school record five-game shutout streak that the Cardinals will take into today's game against Northern Illinois University.

As the bells rang from Shafer Bell Tower, Homecoming 2007's Music on McKinley began. Despite the cold weather, a large number of festival goers moved from act to act and stand to stand. Jacob Laskowski of the Newman Center was on hand with a variety of student artworks.
