Asian Celebration

The Ball State University L.A. Pittenger Student Center is dressing up for Halloween. In celebration of the holiday, the Asian American Student Association will transform the Student Center Ballroom into an Asian folklore-inspired haunted house. Sophomore Noel Kunz, AASA vice president, said haunted house visitors can expect to be scared but also informed about Asian culture.

Students organize cornhole tournament

Bags soared through the air of the Field and Sports Building Saturday, where 26 teams dueled for cornhole supremacy. The thuds of dozens of bags hitting the wooden boards echoed around the room, evidence that the class project was a success. Senior Adam Smith, a sports administration major, said he and his 31 classmates organized the tournament for their event management class.

SOCCER: Ball State fails to clinch MAC

A 1-0 loss at the University at Buffalo Friday prevented the Ball State University soccer team from clinching the Mid-American Conference regular season championship this weekend. However, the Cardinals (11-5-1, 8-1-1 MAC) maintained their MAC lead with a 2-1 win at Kent State University (7-9-1, 5-5 MAC) Sunday.

FIELD HOCKEY: BSU loses despite outshooting Bears

Take away the score from the stat book, and one might have assumed Ball State University's game against Missouri State University on Sunday was one-sided. The Cardinals outshot the Bears 21-8, forced Missouri State's goalkeeper Kim Kinsella to save 16 shots and had two forwards get more shots on goal than the entire Missouri State's team.

Volunteers organize festival for children

Freshman William Fronczak volunteers to work the air shooter at Student Voluntary Services' Fall Festival. Foster children from the community gathered for the event Friday in Cardinal Hall of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. SVS Secretary Mallory Collins said children could participate in many activities such as pumpkin decorating, face painting, story time and games.

OUR VIEW: Drinking problems aren't fun, games

Alcoholism, overindulgence and binge drinking are serious issues, especially on a college campus where students are known to frequent bars with inexpensive nightly specials and house parties featuring tapped kegs and bowls of mysterious juice. Alcohol awareness programs should reflect that seriousness instead of using games and stunts to "show" students the effects of drinking too much alcohol.

University has events to teach about alcohol

From driving under the influence to drunken miniature golf simulations, National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week's activities gave students a first-hand look at the effects of alcohol consumption. Health Educator Lisa Thomason said the week was an effective way to inform students about the danger of alcohol abuse.

Elliott Hall holds costume ball

Participants danced and bobbed for apples at Elliott Hall's first Halloween ball Friday. Fonzie of Happy Days along with the Baroness Samedi and Ghostbusters attended. Leonardo Ortega, head of organizing the event, said at the start of the party that he was expecting at least 60 people to come.

Screams echoed through the dark hallways of Ball State University's L.A. Pittenger Student Center as students made their way through the mental institution-themed haunted house Friday and Saturday. Organizer Mike Beer said University Programs Board sponsored the event, which was titled Sunnyhaven.

FOOTBALL: Illini running back dominates

Five days before Ball State University's game at the University of Illinois, coach Brady Hoke labeled Illini junior Rashard Mendenhall among the best running backs he's prepared for while with the Cardinals. That list of runners during the past five years includes former Auburn University running back Kenny Irons - a rookie with the Cincinnati Bengals - and the University of Michigan's Mike Hart - a Heisman Trophy candidate in his senior season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals finish fall season at Lady Tigers Invitational

On Friday and Saturday in Memphis, Tenn., the Ball State University women's tennis team finished out its fall season with victories at the Lady Tigers Invitational. Freshman Hayley Hall defeated Jessica Flannery of Southern Illinois University 6-0, 6-0 and Marta Gomez-Jordana of the University of Arkansas-Little Rock 6-2, 6-1 to claim the Division II singles championship.

Fewer than four seconds separated sophomore Ali Bishel from a Miami University's Laura Neufarth and a Mid-American Conference championship. The Ball State University sophomore finished second at the cross country conference championship Saturday with a time of 17:38.

Just when you thought that prostitutes couldn't get any crazier. The crime rates in El Alto, Bolivia, were at an all-time high. City officials traced the crime back to the Red Light District. It was the root of the problem: the area was haven for criminals.

THE BIG O: Wealth needs redistribution

"Kid Nation," a new show on CBS, is a reflection of the American society as a whole. The show takes 40 children, ranging in ages from nine to 14, and places them in an abandoned ghost town known as Bonanza City for 40 days. The children must dictate the everyday functions of the town while also maintaining a sense of order.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards lose 8th straight match

Staying positive and confident, that is what the Ball State University women's volleyball team is trying to do after being swept twice last weekend, giving it eight consecutive losses. "Every game is a new start and we just have to stay confident in ourselves no matter what is happening," freshman libero Alyssa Rio said.

CAMPUS: UPB to operate haunted house at Student Center

University Programs Board will transform part of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center into a haunted house this weekend. Organizer Mike Beer said the attraction features a 1950s mental institution theme. "When you walk in, you are being admitted to an insane asylum as a patient," he said.

SOCCER: Cards prepare for Buffalo, new surface

Instead of practicing at the Ball State soccer field like usual Tuesday, the Ball State University soccer team practiced at Scheumann Stadium. The Cardinals (10-4-1, 7-0-1 Mid-American Conference) practiced at the football field because it has synthetic grass like the stadium at the University at Buffalo (5-9-2, 2-5-1 MAC), Ball State's opponent today, coach Michelle Salmon said.

One of the signs that exemplify the transformation Ball State University's football program has undergone during the past couple seasons is, the way the Cardinals have competed against opponents from power conferences. Against its last two opponents from power conferences - the University of Nebraska and the University of Michigan - Ball State has lost by less than 10 points and both contests have gone down to the final minutes.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards play at home with losing streak

While the Ball State University women's volleyball is 2-8 in the Mid-American Conference this season, it still has hopes of a banner year. With six MAC matches left the Cardinals are playing to get the best possible seed in the MAC Tournament. The better the seed, the easier the road will be to achieving a MAC tournament championship.
