Victims Advocate receives portion of student fees

Despite losing federal funding this month, administrators approved a proposal to institutionalize the Office of Victims Services, which includes the Victims Advocate Program. June Payne, director of counseling and health services, said after learning about the loss of the federal grant, administrators approved her proposal to keep the services, which are projects of the Campus and Community Alliance to Support Safety and Advocacy for Victims.

The time has come for athletics director Tom Collins to make the hiring decisions of his life. Since the university apologized to former men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson in December 2007, two members of the athletics department, Deputy Athletics Director Ken Brown and compliance director Kyle Brennan, have left the athletics department.

FOOTBALL: Bowl trip to finish with debt

Playing in the International Bowl is going to cost Ball State University financially. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said the expenses of traveling to the game with the team, band, cheerleaders and staff will cost Ball State more than it made for the game.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards return to action with fun meet

After a month since their last competition, the Ball State University swimming and diving teams are starting with a fun meet to get back into competition. The Cardinals will compete at 6:30 p.m. at the House of Champions Relay in Indianapolis. Ball State will be one of four teams at the meet and compete against IUPUI, the University of Evansville and Western Illinois University.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU concludes investigation

A monetary settlement between Ball State University and former men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson has not been settled. Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, said the documents are still being finalized. Ball State is working on the settlement following the conclusion of a five-month external investigation by judge Myra Selby.

Housing rates to go up

Students who live on Ball State University's campus can expect an increase in room and board costs for the second year in a row. Alan Hargrave, director of housing and residence life, said the Board of Trustees has increased the room and board budget by 3.

Senior wins new car in bowl halftime show

Ball State University senior Amy Duncan was selected through a drawing to compete in the halftime show of the GMAC bowl. Duncan had to race against two other men while trying to put on football gear at various stages in the race. Her prize is $20,000 toward a new Chevy of her choice.

Commission accredits police department

After spending three years working to comply with more than 400 standards, Ball State University Police Department became the first university in Indiana to be accredited by a national commission. Gene Burton, director of public safety, said the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies inspected the police department and its administration in August, and the commission granted accreditation to Ball State during a hearing in November, Burton said.

Former deputy AD heads to Lambuth

Former Ball State University associate athletics director Ken Brown began his duties today as the athletics director at Lambuth University. Brown retired Dec. 20 after 17 years at Ball State University to accept the position in Jackson, Tenn. Brown began working at Ball State in 1991 as the director of athletics business services.

Trustees pass smoking ban

The Board of Trustees unanimously decided to snuff out smoking on Ball State University's campus, and a group of students helped make that happen, according to university officials. Kay Bales, vice president of student affairs, said Ball State will begin an awareness campaign to alert the university about the policy change.

Student death trial begins this month

Four years after the death of Ball State University student Michael McKinney, Robert Duplain will go to trial Jan. 22. A representative from U.S. District Judge Richard Young's clerks office said McKinney vs. Duplain is a civil case instead of a criminal case because McKinney's family filed a lawsuit against Duplain and the university.

Associate head coach and acting head coach Lisa McDonald met with each player of the Ball State University women's basketball team this week to talk about the upcoming conference schedule and said each player had one thought in mind. "We agree that our start is in the past," McDonald said.
