TRACK AND FIELD: Runner earns national academic award

The Ball State University cross country team and sophomore Ali Bishel received honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team on Tuesday. Bishel qualified as an individual by carrying at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and completing a minimum 24 semester hours through the 2007 fall term.

Going into this weekend's Mid-American Conference men's swimming and diving championships, the Ball State University coaches do not know if they like the format. For the first time, the MAC will combine with the Sun Belt Conference for the conference championships.

Prosecutor plans to file charges

The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office plans to file charges against four Ball State University-affiliated women who were arrested in connection with an assault at a party in October, Deputy Prosecutor Judi Calhoun said. Calhoun said she decided to file charges of battery with serious bodily injury against Ball State students Kari Streib, 20, Ashley Kirkman, 20, Rene Whiteley, 19, and former student Amanda Polson.

Charity event to celebrate cancer survivors

"Celebrate, remember, and fight back" is the theme for the 2008 American Cancer Society's Relay for Life that will be held from 3 p.m. April 18 to 9 a.m. April 19 at LaFollette Field. Relay for Life is an overnight charity event held throughout the United States to celebrate cancer survivors, remember people lost to cancer and to promote cancer awareness.

Senators receive praise for work

Feelings of joy and sorrow resonated through the Ball State University Student Government Association as senators had their last formal meeting of the legislative term Wednesday. Senators, caucus chairpersons and committee leaders thanked and congratulated everyone on the work they have done this year.

Recently, the Ball State University College Republicans put up fliers around campus regarding the Democratic primaries. As Alex Carroll noted in his column Monday, the fliers were torn down during the following weekend. If this was the work of angry liberals, as Al thinks, it indicates that there are some bratty liberals on campus.

The Ball State University softball team swept the Mid-American Conference West Division awards this week. The conference announced Wednesday that junior Tiffany Garofano earned the pitcher of the week award and senior Amanda Pick won the player of the week award.

I've had only one part-time job in my four years at Ball State University. No, it wasn't wiping down tables in the Atrium, and no, it wasn't pushing book carts at Bracken. For an entire school year, I made my way up and down the back elevator in the Art and Journalism Building to the fourth floor where I posed nude for drawing classes.

Weekends in Muncie, especially for the under-21 crowd, provide ample time to sit at home watching movies. This weekend, however, a rather exhilarating entertainment opportunity is presenting itself. The No. 14 Ball State University men's volleyball team has won three consecutive matches against nationally ranked teams and is currently in first place in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.

Students continue YWCA project

A team of Business Fellows students is putting the students' classroom knowledge to work to help the Muncie YWCA better serve the community. Team leader Jonathan Lynch said the students learned about how efficiently the YWCA uses its resources and facilities, and the team will submit a more efficient plan in April.

Spam scam appears at Ball State

Students' e-mail accounts are exposed to a new form of e-mail spamming, which bypasses spam filters, consuming space in the accounts. Loren Malm, Ball State University's assistant director of security, policy, systems and assessment, said spam e-mails were reported to be circulating in university e-mail accounts as of Monday.

Disappointment seems to be a common occurrence in this year's Student Government Association election. The slates disappointed us the first time when they weren't at the first nominating convention. They disappointed again when we got to see their platforms, riddled with vagueness and limited feasibility.

BSU soldiers prepare to go to Iraq

A group of Ball State University students have put school on hold while they are in Fort Stewart, Ga. training with more than 3,000 soldiers. The students are members of the 76th Infantry Brigade of the National Guard, which, according to the Indiana National Guard's Web site, will be deployed to Iraq in early March.

Monika Starling woke up drenched in sweat with a 102-degree fever. She slowly pulled herself out of bed but had to sit down quickly and wait for a wave of nausea and dizziness to pass. Her roommates had already left for the day, and it took all she had to drive herself to the Amelia T.

MoTini's comedy crew to perform in Pruis tonight

Six comedians will perform stand-up at "A Night of Comedy" at 8:30 p.m. in Pruis Hall. Joey Martin, senior telecommunications major, said the comedy program is an extension of his and fellow telecommunications major Ryan Ehresman's weekly stand-up comedy shows at MoTini's.
