Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis was not one of the players invited to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation, but that did not stop people from voting for him. Davis finished eighth place in the Heisman voting, receiving one second-place vote and eight third-place votes.

The Ball State University women's basketball team lost to Temple University 78-73 Monday night for its first home loss of the season. Ball State is 6-4. Ball State led 32-30 at halftime. Ball State shot 45 percent from the floor and shot 25 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Throughout Bryant Haines' five-year career, the fifth-year senior linebacker followed the direction former Ball State head football coach Brady Hoke took him. During practice, Haines listened to the instructions his position coach taught. During games, he watched as Hoke called in defensive plays from the sidelines.

The Ball State University women's baskteball team lost Tuesday against University of Alabama 81-75. Ball State is 7-5. Ball State trailed Alabama 45-27 at halftime. The team outscored Alabama 48-36 in the second half. Ball State outscored Alabama in the paint 38-20, but were outscored in bench points 52-12.

Ball State issues hiring freeze

Ball State University will issue a hiring freeze for vacant and new positions, according to President's Perspective, an e-mail newsletter sent out by President Jo Ann Gora. Exceptions to this policy will be limited and require approval in consultation with the president's cabinet, the e-mail said.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards finish 2nd in MIVA preseason poll

The Ball State University men's volleyball team was predicted to finish in second place in the conference preseason poll released Monday afternoon. With the six Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association head coaches making the selections, the Cardinals received 26 votes - one more vote than defending conference champion Ohio State University.

Ball State University junior quarterback Nate Davis said Friday night he is thinking about entering his name into this year's NFL Draft but he will not make the decision until Winter Break. The statement comes one week after Davis said he will stay for his senior season at Ball State, a decision he made immediately following the Cardinals' 42-24 loss to the University at Buffalo in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game on Dec.

ESPN.com's Joe Schad reported late Monday night Ball State University is expected to name offensive coordinator Stan Parrish successor to former head football coach Brady Hoke. The report was published less than six hours after the university announced Hoke's resignation.

Brady Hoke resigned his position as Ball State University's head football coach to become the next head coach at San Diego State University, according to a press release the university sent Monday night. In a statement, Ball State President Jo Ann Gora vowed she and athletics director Tom Collins did everything possible to keep Hoke with the university.

Former BSU student sentenced in beating

A former Ball State University student was sentenced Friday in connection with an October 2007 beating. Judge Robert Barnet Jr. sentenced Kari Streib to a three-month jail term, followed by nine months of probation. Streib will also be responsible for paying more than $20,000 in restitution fees to the victim, as a result of a crime that Barnet called "particularly disturbing and heinous.

FOOTBALL: Agent says Hoke's decision to stay or leave Ball State to come by Monday

Ball State University football coach Brady Hoke's agent neither confirm or deny an ESPN.com report Sunday night stating San Diego State University is prepared to name Hoke the school's next head football coach. Aztecs athletics director Jeff Schemmel interviewed Hoke this week in San Diego about becoming the next head football coach of a program that finished this season 2-10.

The Ball State University women's basketball team defeated Indiana State University Saturday night by 82-63. Ball State has a 5-3 record and is undefeated at home. Ball State shot 49 percent from the floor and shot 66 percent on free throws. Ball State also out rebounded Indiana State 48-28.

FOOTBALL: Signs show Hoke out as Ball State's coach

An e-mail posted on overthepylon.com from Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora concludes Brady Hoke is no longer the Cardinals' head football coach. "We worked very hard in our efforts to retain Coach Hoke," Gora wrote in the e-mail. "Recognizing his achievements this season, the university offered him a new deal that would have made Brady Ball State's highest paid employee.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals downed by Colonels 71-58

Ball State University's men's basketball team dropped its third straight game after losing 71-58 Saturday against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. Forward Anthony Newell led the Cardinals with 17 points and six rebounds. Eastern Kentucky forward Josh Taylor led the team with 16 points and five rebounds.

Soldiers glad to be home

Stepping off the plane, 1st Lt. Daniel Banter beheld his wife for the first time in nine months, and she looked even more beautiful than he remembered. Relief poured through him as he realized that he was finally home. Banter, a Ball State University graduate, was part of the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, and with 3,400 soldiers, it was the largest deployment of soldiers from Indiana since World War II.
