Ball State discontinues Up 'til Dawn philanthropy

Members of Up 'til Dawn learned of the group's fate Wednesday as Ball State University cut all ties with the student philanthropy that benefits St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Megan Johnson and four other members of the group's executive board were told in what they were told would be a formal meeting regarding how the group felt they've worked through the Office of Student Life.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Summitt focuses on Cards

The all-time winningest basketball coach in NCAA history had only good things to say about Ball State University women's basketball program and its performance this season. University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt said Wednesday that her team would not take Ball State lightly in their upcoming NCAA Tournament first-round game.

GYMNASTICS: MAC Championship goes through Ball State

The 2009 Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Championships will be held at Ball State University, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals (4-13, 1-5 MAC) hold the fifth place spot in the conference standings, edging Western Michigan University (3-12, 0-6 MAC) by one win.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals set to tackle state rival

Ball State University will try to stay atop the food chain in Indiana as the men's tennis team will play Indiana State University Sunday. The Cardinals are 4-1 on the year against in-state opponents. Unlike other varsity sports, Ball State and Indiana State don't appear to have a recruiting battle for local talent.

Finals survival kits on sale until April 20

Finals survival kits are on sale through the Residence Hall Association until April 20. Kate Webber, director of alumni and student programs, said the kits include a variety of snacks and food. A game or puzzle and school supplies including pens, paper and high lighters are also included in the kit, she said.

Student sues Ball State after fall

A student filed a lawsuit against Ball State University after she slipped and injured herself on campus, her lawyer said Wednesday. Brittany Manora's attorney, Tim Rowe, filed the lawsuit on her behalf March 3 in Delaware County Circuit Court 4, which Judge John Feick presides over, according to court documents.

The leadership of Student Government Association officially changed Wednesday. Campus Alliance's government of the student body concluded, and it was not bad. The slate was put together in 10 days after 2008's first SGA nomination convention failed to yield a single slate, but it was still able to come away with a successful term.

Students urged to donate

More than 4.5 million people are expected to need a blood transfusion this year, and more than 100 Ball State University students took the chance to help those people during the Angels for Life Blood Drive Wednesday. But the number of donors is still too low, blood drive organizer Kim Hiatt said.

SOFTBALL: Rain holds off for Cardinals victory

Muncie weather decided to hold off long enough for the Ball State University softball team to win the first game of its doubleheader against Valparaiso University Wednesday. The second game of the doubleheader, which were Ball State's first scheduled home games of the season, was canceled after half an inning.

Alumnus returns to Muncie with original performance

Eight years after graduating from Ball State University, Kevin Thornton is coming back to Muncie with a show he created by himself. Thornton will perform "Sex, Dreams and Self Control" today and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in the Muncie Civic Theatre. Thornton said the play is a mix of stand-up comedy, spoken word and music.

Student Life cuts campuswide philanthropy group

The student philanthropy "Up 'til Dawn" was put to sleep Wednesday by the Ball State University Office of Student Life, according to a letter sent from the office. According to the university's Web site, Up 'til Dawn raises money and awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Louisville: The field hockey team scored a program-record 12 goals in a win against Louisville during the 1996 season. Morehead State: Susan D. Creasap, associate director of bands at Morehead State University, earned her Doctor of Arts in Wind Band Conducting from Ball State.

Redesign of the Ball State Baseball Stadium may prove to be just another idea to land on the desk of Associate Athletic Director Pat Quinn, but it does offer hands-on experience for an independent study. Seniors Audrey Neiswender and Ryan Hanigan approached professor emeritus Tony Costello this fall to help guide their study.

Pub crawl attracts large crowd

St. Patrick's Day falling on a Tuesday did not stop students from celebrating in green flair and with green beer. Doc's on Dill assistant manager Katie Cambell said she was surprised by the bar's St. Patrick's Day turnout. "I couldn't believe how many Irish people were celebrating on a Tuesday after having a week off," Cambell said.

Student arrested on multiple felony charges

A Ball State University student remained in Delaware County Jail as of 4:30 p.m. today after Muncie police arrested him on suspicion of possession of a handgun by a dangerous felon, among other charges, jail officials said. James Cleo Robertson, 40, was arrested early Wednesday after Muncie police received a report from a complainant, who was unnamed in the police report, that someone had stolen a handgun and driven off in a white Cadillac Eldorado, according to police reports.

Students wanting to go see Ball State University's women's basketball team play against the University of Tennessee on Sunday still have the chance to sign up for a ride on the fan bus.

Deadline for fan bus extended

The deadline for the fan bus to Ball State University's women's basketball game on Sunday has been extended to Friday at 3 p.m. Associate Athletic Director Matt Wolfert said the total tickets sold at the previous deadline of 5 p.m. today was around 30. The minimum capacity requirement of 40 passengers has been disregarded so students who have already purchased tickets won't have to be refunded, he added.
