12 teams turn out for Cardinal Chili Challenge

Friday afternoon was chilly, but not chilly enough to stop people from going to the Public Relations Student Society of America's 10th annual Cardinal Chili Challenge on University Green. Katie Gammon, PRSSA special events director, said the group made about $500 this year.

Local band releases second CD

Local Muncie band Dreams of University will have a CD release party at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Muncie Civic Theater. The band's first major album, "Morning Rearrangement," was recorded in New York City and will debut at the event, band manager Alan Maugherman said.

Messineo surprised by regional award

Years of service in research and teaching have earned associate professor of sociology Melinda Messineo recognition for her hard work. Messineo will receive this year's John F. Schnabel Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award, given by the North Central Sociology Association on April 18.

Students gather to paint dove outside Bracken

Pale purple and white paint covered the ground next to Bracken Library, with dark purple and green sprinkled in, forming the image of a 20-by-20-foot dove holding an olive branch Thursday. Beneath the dove is a banner that reads, "Ball State promotes nonviolence.

Largest geothermal project in nation not expected to affect students

Although Ball State University is undertaking the largest geothermal project in the history of the United States, the installation is not expected to inconvenience students and faculty. Ball State plans to begin work on the approximately $66 million project May 10, the day after May Commencement, Director of Engineering and Operations Jim Lowe said.

PRSSA hosts Chili Challenge

Cardinal Chili Challenge will offer a variety of sweet, spicy and vegetarian concoctions at PRSSA's annual chili cook off. The Public Relations Student Society of America has put on the chili challenge annually for more than 10 years, Katie Gammon, PRSSA special events director, said.

GYMNASTICS: Graceful contenders

It has been six years and there have been two head coaches since the Ball State University gymnastics team has appeared in the NCAA Regional gymnastics competition. In 2003, Ball State's Quiana Williams placed 10th in the all-around competition, Amy Bodus placed 13th in the all-around and Cassie Anthony competed on the uneven bars and the balance beam in the NCAA Central Regional under then-head coach Lisa Simonton.

Rock Paper Scissors raises $400

Screams and chants reverberated through Ball Gymnasium Wednesday night as fraternity and sorority members cheered on their respective teams. The first Rock Paper Scissors contest wrapped up the third day of Ball State University's Greek Week and raised money and canned goods for Muncie Mission Ministries Inc.

A black ski mask. In the middle of a Sunday afternoon on campus, its presence was fashionably obnoxious. Not just because of the timing, but also the weather. Though it's late March and a bit chilly, the conditions were not intolerable enough to warrant winter weather gear.

Comedy night at Pruis

The seats of Pruis Hall were partially filled Wednesday night with students prepared to laugh at the film debut of "Odd Job" by Something Else TV, along with stand-up comedians and improvisational comedy acts. Host Ryan Ehresman introduced Joe Ferguson, a star of the half-hour comedy movie "Odd Job," and Indianapolis comedian Janette Perez to warm up the crowd with jokes.

Seniors seek other paths

Graduation marks the beginning of adulthood and, while some don't mind looking for a job, paying bills and settling into their chosen lifestyle, others choose less traditional paths. Several out-going seniors have found those paths. Josh Doane, a senior music technology major, will graduate in May but will postpone his transition and return to Ball State University to complete a Master of Business Administration.

Free the Slaves promote awareness

About 27 million people live in slavery around the world and 14,500 are trafficked in the United States. To raise awareness about the issue of slavery around the world, Free the Slaves' Ball State University chapter showed an episode of "Frontline" about the sex slave industry Wednesday evening in Teachers College.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Green, Jarrett listed as WNBA prospects

After guiding the Ball State University women's basketball team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance this past season, guards Porchia Green and Kiley Jarrett are gaining attention as possible professional prospects. The Web site for the Seattle Storm, one of the 13 teams in the WNBA, lists Green as one of the top shooting guard prospects in the 2009 WNBA Draft.

Kinghorn's replacement announced

Ball State University found an internal replacement for the out-going vice president of business affairs. President Jo Ann Gora named Randy Howard, associate vice president of finance and assistant treasurer, as the successor to 43-year Ball State employee Tom Kinghorn in Wednesday's President's Perspective.

TRACK AND FIELD: Bishel receives MAC academic recognition

Ball State University track and field athlete Ali Bishel continued to earn honors Wednesday from the Mid-American Conference. The junior was named to the 2009 Women's Indoor Track & Field Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team Wednesday. She was named the Most Outstanding Female Track Performer at the 2009 MAC Championships earlier this season.

MEN'S TENNIS: Freshman gets conference's weekly honor

Ball State University freshman men's tennis player Cliff Morrison was named the Mid-American Conference Tennis Player of the Week Wednesday. Morrison improved his record to 12-3 on the season last week at the Boise State Invitational, where he went 2-1 in singles play.

BASEBALL: Cardinals miss chances, lose 5-4 in extra innings

Unable to find a clutch hit late in Wednesday's game, the Ball State University baseball team fell 5-4 in 12 innings to the University of Louisville. The longest game played by Ball State (12-12) in three years ended when pinch hitter Alec Lowery lofted a fly ball deep enough to left field to score pinch runner Nate Holland from third base on a sacrifice fly.

Peace project paints pavement

Students and the Ball State University community have the opportunity to help make a collaborative, creative mural to bring awareness to school violence. Paint 4 Peace, a three-day event designed to encourage nonviolent conflict resolution in schools using education and art, starts today with a series of events and a community art project.
