TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State opens outdoor season in West Lafayette

The Ball State University track and field team is cracking the windows open and embracing uncertain weather elements in its first outdoor meet of the season. The Cardinals will travel to West Lafayette Saturday for the Mike Poehlien Invitational. "We're using the first meet to get all the kinks out," sophomore thrower Lauren Cleaver said.

GYMNASTICS: Coming off top place finishes in the MAC, three Ball State gymnasts prepare to take their performance to the NCAA Regionals

It has been six years and there have been two head coaches since the Ball State University gymnastics team has appeared in the NCAA Regional gymnastics competition. In 2003, Ball State's Quiana Williams placed 10th in the all-around competition, Amy Bodus placed 13th in the all-around and Cassie Anthony competed on the uneven bars and the balance beam in the NCAA Central Regional under then-head coach Lisa Simonton.

McKinley Mile rolls through today

The McKinley Mile, the annual bike-a-thon down McKinley Avenue, is today along with several other events. Nine teams will participate this year -- 2 women's teams and 7 men's teams. The teams will be combined in the races, but female winners and male winners will be crowned.

It has been the goal of the Ball State University men's tennis team since the first practice in the fall: win the Mid-American Conference Championship. The next step would be two victories on the road this weekend against the University at Buffalo and the University of Toledo.

The McKinley Mile after party scheduled for Saturday night has been canceled, American Advertising Federation President Jeff Renoe said. "It's not happening," he said, "I don't have anything to say about the issue. I honestly have no idea why it's not going on.

Panel discussing nonviolence has important university, city members

A panel presentation with many prominent campus and community leaders Thursday night at Pruis Hall discussed nonviolence in schools and peaceful conflict resolution. Ball State President Jo Ann Gora moderated the discussion, which took place at 7 p.m., and included prominent community members such as Eric King, Muncie Community Schools superintendent; Bart Peterson, former Indianapolis mayor and Ball State faculty member; Frank Hood, former president of the Student Government Association and school shooting survivor; and Robert Guilleman, also known as Sidewalk Sam, a world-renowned community artist.

Magazine to feature fashion trends

A student produced fashion magazine that benefiting charity officially launches today. Ball State University's fashion promotions class started High Contrast magazine rather than the usual fashion show. Whitney Scott, merchandising and apparel design major, said each student has a page in the magazine which includes design lines, a how-to accessory page and several fashion trends.

MITS could change routes near campus

Taking a MITS bus from Ball State University's campus to Wal-Mart could take a little bit longer once the semester ends. MITS plans to cut down its pick-up frequencies for the Wal-Mart route from once every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes as a way to cut costs during slow summer months, Mary Gaston, assistant general manager for MITS, said Thursday.

BASEBALL: Ball State continues MAC play with first visit to Buffalo

It seems unlikely the Ball State University baseball team will start a series with a Mid-American Conference opponent that played a game more diametrically opposite than its own previous game than it will this weekend with the University at Buffalo. The Cardinals (12-12, 3-2 MAC) lost a 5-4 pitchers' duel at the University of Louisville on Wednesday.

Survey to assess student campus activity, academics for year's end

Students have been selected randomly on Ball State University's campus to take part in a survey in an e-mail titled "End of the year assessment." Educational Benchmarking Inc., an institution that conducts surveys for universities and other institutions, is conducting the current survey through Ball State e-mail.
