WOMEN'S TENNIS: Team earn academic honor for 11th consecutive year

The Ball State University women's tennis team has had a tradition for over a decade of maintaining a high grade point average. Last school year was no different for the team. The Cardinals were named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's All-Academic Team for the 11th straight year and for the 12th time in the last 13 years.

FOOTBALL: Reporter's notebook

DETROIT - Northeast Ohio has a long tradition of producing talented football players, making it a recruiting hotspot for the Mid-American Conference and many other colleges. Ball State University coach Stan Parrish has spent a lot of time recruiting around his hometown, landing players such as linebacker Travis Freeman, safety Alex Knipp and wide receiver Torieal Gibson.

Ball State grad gets job with Senate

Ball State University alumnus Todd Darroca, a Muncie native, said he spent his first official day at work meeting Indiana senators and learning more about his new home of Indianapolis. Darroca, who received his undergraduate degree in telecommunications in 2008 and master's degree in information and communication sciences in 2009 from Ball State, was named a new press secretary for the Indiana Senate Republican Majority Caucus on Wednesday.

Muncie MusicFest submission deadline approaches

The deadline to submit bands to the Muncie MusicFest shifted from Aug. 3 to Aug. 31 to give more time for Ball State University students to participate. Cheryl Crowder, member of the organizing committee for Muncie MusicFest, said about 95 bands have submitted so far.

MEN'S GOLF: Steger eliminated in U.S. Amateur Championships match play

Steger - one of 312 players in the event - advanced to the U.S. Amateur Championships by winning the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifer at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati. He tied for ninth overall after two rounds of stroke play at Tulsa's Southern Hills Country Club by shooting a 72-71.

Free HPV vaccine available until Dec. 31

Women ages 9 to 26 can now receive free vaccines protecting against some strains of the human papillomavirus at the Delaware County Health Department thanks to a program funded by the Indiana State Department of Health. According to the Center for Disease Control's Web site, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease, and most people that are infected don't know they have it.

Parking Services expands commuter lot space

Another parking lot has been opened on Ball State University's campus to accommodate commuter students. The new lot will be open at the corner of Ashland and Martin streets. Nancy Wray, manager of the Office of Parking Services, said it isn't uncommon for lots to fill up quickly during the first few weeks of school when students are getting adjusted to their new schedules.

While libraries all around Muncie are cutting their hours or closing, a new one will open in the Village today. Charlie's Library is a different kind of library, however. While it will probably compete for traffic with Bracken Library, patrons won't find shelves of books and encyclopedias, but rather a collection of booze, dim lighting and procrastinating, binge-drinking college students.

Ball State's annual Quad Bash returns with inflatables, food, live music

Live music, inflatables, miniature golf and free food will invade the Quad for Quad Bash. Quad Bash is an annual event, now in its 16th year, put on by the University Program Board. Starting at 6 p.m., the event, which is part of the larger Welcome Week, will feature a Slip 'n Slide, gladiator joust and bungee run.
