SWINE FLU CHRONICLES: This stinks

I can't say whether I came in contact with a sick person or I touched the same door knob or hand rail as one. It doesn't really matter now. For the past four and a half days I haven't left my house because I've displayed every symptom of what people are calling H1N1 or swine flu.I woke up Thursday feeling pretty well. I got home from the newsroom relatively early and I wasted only about an hour and a half of the time I could've been sleeping by playing video games.

MEN'S GOLF: Cards thrive in classroom despite several absences

Despite the academic/athletic pressures, the 2008-09 Ball State men's team was recently named a Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team for achieving a team grade-point average of 3.0 or better. To be eligible for the honor, a university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.

BASKETBALL: MAC preseason polls released; three Cards named Preseason All-MAC West

 The Mid-American Conference released its preseason polls Wednesday, and the reigning MAC Tournament champion Ball State women's basketball team was predicted to finish second in the MAC West Division behind the University of Toledo. The Cardinals' men's team — co-MAC West champs last season — was predicted to finish in fourth place in the West this season.

Microsoft upgraded to a new operating system, Windows 7, Tuesday. Many of Ball State University's computers have already been updated, and school officials say they will continue to spread the system across campus computers.

Lighting the way

John McVey remembers coming out as a junior while at Ball State University 32 years ago.The time was both a traumatic and easy time that was somewhat eased by maintaining social relationships with faculty members on campus."There was still a divide, but it did make us feel better," he said.At the time Gay Activists Union, the GLBTQ organization on campus, had a couple meetings a month and served primarily as a way for members of the GLBTQ community to meet.
