Geothermal work pays off for Ball State

Ball State gives 'Extreme' scholarships

Ball State University is providing four fully-paid scholarships for the children of Andy and Heather Cowan-Brown – the family being featured on the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" episode filmed in Bunker Hill, Ind. Oct. 21-28.Andy and Heather are factory workers who have struggled to raise their four children. The children – Ryan, Trevor, Kori, and Mason – are 16, 13, 12 and 8, respectively, said Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for University Marketing and Communications.

Edward James Olmos talks to students about being open to diversity

Edward James Olmos wishes he would never have to give another seminar like he did Wednesday night in Pruis Hall."The things that I'm talking about are already so understood," Olmos said. "It's really nothing that you haven't heard before."Olmos, a long-time actor and social activist, spoke about the definition of race, conflicting religion, personal identity and how none of those issues should divide us in front of a crowd of more than 600. He said that peace comes from loving all parts of oneself, no matter where those parts originate.

Dogs dress up for charity

A chilly Wednesday evening on the MT Cup patio was filled with the sounds of barking dogs and Halloween music such as the "Monster Mash."Dogs dressed in costumes, including a lobster in a pot, a hockey player and a bagel with cream cheese, walked one-by-one in front of four judges, audience members and their owners.

Obama declares swine flu a national emergency

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, giving his health chief the power to let hospitals move emergency rooms offsite to speed treatment and protect noninfected patients.The declaration, signed Friday night and announced Saturday, comes with the disease more prevalent than ever in the country and production delays undercutting the government's initial, optimistic estimates that as many as 120 million doses of the vaccine could be available by mid-October.

Ball State sophomore recognized for environmental video

Graduate student Stephanie Donovan was a participant in the Green Energy NOW! contest, which urged Indiana residents to voice their opinions about climate change.The Hoosier Environmental Council hosted this contest in order to bring more awareness to the issue, which the council said is currently under Congressional debate.

'Howl-oween' to help local animal rescue shelter

The MT Cup will be hosting its first ever "Howl-oween" Dog Costume Contest to raise money for Muncie's Animal Rescue Fund on Wednesday.The contest will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday on the MT Cup patio. The winner of the contest will receive a trophy and a gift certificate to MT Cup, ARF founder Terri Panszi said.

I-465 eastbound reopens today

Parts of Interstate 465 in Indianapolis reopened this morning with restrictions.The Indiana Department of Transportation announced I-465 eastbound, from U.S. 31 (Meridian Street) to 56th Street on the city's northeast side, was expected to reopen at midnight Sunday. The left lane over the bridge, as well as the I-69 southbound ramp to I-465 southbound will remain closed through midweek.

Parking garages' new stations accept credit, debit cards

Ball State University parking garages now accept credit and debit card payment, Parking Services announced Wednesday.Nancy Wray, Parking Services office manager, said the office decided to add the new option after they installed upgraded pay stations in the parking garages in late spring.

State health department cites Dining for 54 sanitation violations

Ball State University's dining facilities received 27 critical violations and 27 noncritical violations according to inspection reports.The Indiana State Department of Health and Ball State environmental specialist Tom Russell inspected five campus dining facilities in September.

College of Sciences and Humanities recognizes outstanding women at award ceremony

The College of Sciences and Humanities showcased the hard work and accomplishments of a select group of Indiana women at its 2009 Indiana Women of Achievement awards ceremony."[The awards] are important because we live in a society that still does not give equal credit to men and women for their skills and their accomplishments and their leadership," said Susan Johnson, associate dean of the College of Sciences and Humanities.
