Just two weeks following the resignation of former Ball State football coach Pete Lembo, a football blog reported that Ball State offered its head coaching position to Mike Neu on Jan. 5.
Ball State has announced head football coach Pete Lembo has resigned from his position to become assistant head coach and special teams coordinator for Maryland. The move to Maryland and the Big Ten "is one which I simply can't pass up," Lembo said in a press release. Lembo, who just completed his fifth year as head coach in Muncie, led the Cardinals to a 3-9 record in 2015.
I'd like to start this off by saying: at least we're not Eastern Michigan. They finished the season 0-8 in the conference, 1-11 overall.
Next season the Ball State football offense will be without senior wider receiver Jordan Williams, making junior KeVonn Mabon the number one target. Opposing defenses will be facing a very familiar looking Ball State football team.
Ball State football had five players win All Mid-American Conference accolades despite the team's 3-9 end of season record. Junior linebacker Sean Wiggins and red-shirt junior defensive lineman Joshua Posley both received first team accolades. Wiggins finished second on the team and 14th in the MAC with 94 tackles during his first season as a starter. Posley played his first two seasons in Cincinnati, before transferring to Ball State. He had a team-high 9.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks on the season. Posley also led the team in quarterback hurries, with six, and forced fumbles, with two.
For the Ball State football team, the season is over. However, senior wide receiver Jordan Williams will be playing in the National Football League Players Association Collegiate Bowl.
While most students went home over Thanksgiving break, student-athletes at Ball State University continued winter season play for their respective athletic teams. Ball State football has had several ups and downs this season, and the team sits at 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference. One area the team has excelled at offensively is the low amount of penalties they give up. Head coach Pete Lembo attributes the low number to the high expectations he set for the team. “If you set the standards and expectations and expect your guys to live up to those every day then you have a much better chance of going out there and not committing foolish turnovers, foolish penalties,” Lembo said.
There have been 12 quarterbacks who have played for the Ball State football team since the new millennium; six of them have been freshman starters.
