About six months after its first meeting, the Mayor's Commission for Ball State Student Relations had a grand total of two members show up for its Friday meeting - out of the ten who should've been there. In fact, schedule conflicts have caused the commission to never meet in its entirety.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Program's first coach moves on

Exactly seven years after being named the first women's soccer coach at Ball State University, the only coach the program has ever had announced Friday he will be taking his talents to another place next season. Ron Rainey, who helped start the soccer program at Ball State in 1999, will take on the challenge of building up another program, this time as head coach of the women's soccer team at the University of Iowa.

Week focuses on education, prevention of sexual assaults

Sexual assault affects everyone. Statistics show that one in four women between the ages of 15 and 23 is the victim of a completed or attempted sexual assault, Lee Van Donselaar, a psychologist at the Counseling Center, said. However, one in 11 men are also victims of sexual assault, he said.

Members fail to show up to meetings

After only one member showed up for the Mayor's Commission for Ball State Student Relations meeting Friday, student officials are planning to discuss new guidelines this week for next year's membership. Muncie Mayor Dan Canan appointed 10 students - two from each grade level and two graduate students - to serve as a line of communication between Ball State University and Muncie last spring, and they began work in September 2005.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards split weekend matches

Sometimes the score doesn't indicate how hard a team works to earn a win. This was the case for the Ball State University women's tennis team on Friday. Even though the Cards pulled out a 7-0 win against Youngstown State University, three of the six singles matches went three sets.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals can't overcome bad shooting in loss to KSU

Julie DeMuth grabbed a career-tying 18 rebounds and scored 12 points Wednesday. But it wasn't enough as Ball State University had the same amount of turnovers (19) as field goals in a road loss to Kent State, 68-55. The Golden Flashes rank in the top four in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense.

Students to raise project funding through annual date auction

The American Institute for Architecture Students will have its annual date auction at 5 p.m. in the Architecture Building Room 100. The event is open to the general public. Proceeds will go toward a special AIAS project, redesigning of the home of a disabled person.

Sometimes, the best way to disprove a stereotype is by doing the complete opposite of it. The best example of this is the civil rights movement. Blacks, long portrayed as violent, less intelligent and generally primitive people, slowly but surely won public support as they continually engaged in nonviolent means of protest to get the rights they deserved.

Q: How did you get started swimming? A; Obviously, my mother. She was the Ball State swimming coach when I was born so I was immediately thrown into it just because of the history of swimming within my family. So you can actually say I started swimming at the age of one, but competitively at five.
