Yearly progress report reflects BSU's success

One of the main reasons Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins wanted the top position in Ball State University's athletic department was because of the high academic standards the school has set for its student-athletes. So when the NCAA announced its second annual Academic Progress Report before Spring Break, it was clear that Ball State still had one of the best student-athlete academic programs in the nation.

Ring-a-ding-ding, make your phone sing

An old woman sits on a park bench feeding the birds. She looks just like any other old woman. She has neat clothes, not a hair out of place on her head and expressive laugh lines surrounding her thin lips. Suddenly, you hear a cell phone ringing. It is the newest hit from that flashy rapper you know, and when you see the old woman on the park bench reach into her handbag to answer the phone, your whole viewpoint changes.

Indoor track season ends at Notre Dame

The Ball State women's indoor track and field team finished up its season at the Alex Wilson Invitational, March 3-4. Sophomore Amber Williams and Junior Terri Abraham, were the only representatives for the Cardinals at the invitational in Notre Dame. Neither was able to improve their marks, however as the indoor season wrapped up.

CLIMBING THE WALLS: Memorization can't replace true learning

It is only the second day back from Spring Break, and my vision is already clouded again with the glaring dots of an unwavering Scantron sheet. As a senior, I thought this semester would be like any other - few official "midterms" would be given, and professors would instead opt for administering exams covering a large chunk of the semester's material before that wonderful week off from classes.

DON'T TAKE THIS TOO SERIOUSLY: 'Save Yourself' delivers mixed message

Beth Twitty, mother of missing teen Natalee Holloway, visited Ball State the week before Spring Break to deliver a message to students about staying safe during the week of debauchery. In the 30-minute speech she touched on: not traveling with strangers, not leaving a drink unattended and not getting in situations where you can't exercise your own free will.

Men's golf places ninth in invitational

The Ball State University men's golf team placed ninth out of 15 teams in Florida at the Orange County National Xavier Invitational over Spring Break. Brandon Boomsma led the Cardinals with a final-round 68 and tied for 23rd finish. Patrick Wilkes-Krier and Wayne Denger tied for 38th, while C.

Gora, SGA discuss MITS Loop

The future of the MITS Loop remains uncertain, but Ball State University students will probably not see it again this semester, Student Government Association President Steve Geraci said. At a meeting with Ball State President Jo Ann Gora on Monday, Geraci said they spoke about the Loop.

Gymnastics squad earns one win over break

The Ball State University gymnastics team earned second place three times in one week. On March 5, the Cardinals competed against Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau with a final score of 195.550-187.325. Another competition on Friday landed Ball State ahead of Air Force, but the team still finished second to the University of Kentucky.

Men's tennis falls without senior player

Looking for their tenth straight victory, the No. 58 Ball State University men's tennis team succumbed to the Rebels of UNLV by a score of 6-1 on Friday. The Rebels (10-3) dominated the Cardinals (11-4) in nearly every facet of the match in the Cardinals' first outdoor match of the season.

SOFTBALL: Cards struggle against nationally-ranked teams

The Ball State University softball team (4-8) fell to three nationally ranked teams, No. 8 Oregon State University (21-2), No. 17 Washington University (18-6) and No. 22 DePaul University (8-5), over the weekend as they lost five of six games at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic in Fresno, California.

Cardinals struggle at first meet in Arizona

The women's golf team finished 16th out of 17 teams in Arizona at the Rio Verde Invitational. Kallie Harrison was the top finisher for Ball State in a tie for 63rd place. Coach Katherine Mowat said she didn't know why Ball State University struggled to a low finish.

Radio hosts interview celebrities

Having the opportunity to talk to celebrities is something people dream about, but for four Ball State University students that dream has become a reality. Students Adam Klotz, Derek Steinborn, Kyle Pierog and Lindsey Thompson are working with the radio station WCRD to air a one-hour radio talk show, Klotz-n-Stein@9.

Officials to discuss MITS Loop's future

The future of the MITS Loop around campus and nearby neighborhoods could be decided today in a meeting between Ball State University administrators and Student Government Association. As an experimental route set up by SGA and MITS, The Loop ran for six weeks from Jan.

Candidate drops out of provost search

Candidate Belinda McCarthy dropped out of the Ball State University provost search last week, saying she had been offered the provost position at another university. "I haven't made a final decision yet," McCarthy said about the job offer, but since she is in negotiations with another university, she decided to pull out of the Ball State search.

Student Government Association and Muncie Indiana Transit System put a lot of effort into the east-of-campus shuttle trial that ran for the eight weeks before Spring Break. Now that the trial has come to an end, there is still no sign of support from the university - despite the trolley's success.

With no budget and an all-volunteer staff, the producers of "BSU Late Night" have to make some compromises. Ball State University junior Jeff Christener said "Late Night" learned to work around many of the funding issues it faced throughout its five-year history.

City events benefit from Mardi Gras

Despite higher production costs this year, the fifth annual Muncie Mardi Gras raked in about $40,000 in profits for downtown development, which will go toward other events such as this weekend's Saint Patrick's Day parade and Summer Jam. About 11,000 Ball State University students and local residents attended the controversial downtown Mardi Gras event, generating about $102,000 in total sales, said Cheryl Crowder, events coordinator of downtown development.
