President Bush did something for the very first time July 19. For the first time in his five-year presidency he vetoed a bill. President Bush's lack of a veto to this point showed his trust in the judgment of Congress. But when it came to the use of unborn children for use in scientific research, President Bush drew the line.

McKinley entrance unveiled

Ball State University reopened McKinley Avenue to unveil a new wrought iron gated entrance, duck pond and bridge. Sometime between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday, the street was reopened to traffic, Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said. "We had communicated that McKinley would be closed until Monday morning," he said, "but the contract was written in such a way that the contractor had until Aug.

Exhibit showcases BSU students' skills

Ball State University is showing off its landscape architecture skills at the Indiana State Fair in a building now sponsored by the university itself. In its third year at the fair, the Ball State Backyard exhibit is being showcased in the Agriculture Horticulture Building.

CAP dean to focus on teaching after Spring Semester

The dean of the College of Architecture and Planning will step down into a faculty role at the end of the Spring Semester after six years leading the college. Joseph Bilello has spent the last 20 years in educational positions, and said he now intends to focus on painting, research and his family.

Bringing down the houses

The face of Riverside is changing. In the past week, Frat Row said goodbye to two old houses and is welcoming Phi Gamma Delta fraternity to the neighborhood. Former houses of Sigma Tau Gamma, Theta Chi and Lambda Chi were demolished. Sigma Phi Epsilon purchased the land the Sigma Tau Gamma and Theta Chi houses were on for $300,000, said Don Park, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon's alumni and volunteer corporation.

Ball State University started out as "everything you need." Then its "cutting edge cool" technology competed with Indiana University's "red hot" campus. Now, Ball State is redefining education with its newest tagline. Around campus this fall, students will begin to see hints of the rebranding of Ball State on banners, signs, billboards and TV commercials marked with the slogan, "Education Redefined.

SHUTTLE BUSES Lisec said she has worked with Transportation Services to create a more reliable shuttle service. SGA conducted a survey during Spring Semester to see what students thought of the current shuttle system and learn what improvements students most wanted.

Three racism action teams take effect this Fall Semester

Racism action teams met this summer and plan to launch several initiatives, a Ball State University administrator said. Kay Bales, vice president of Student Affairs, said three action teams have each produced an element to go into effect Fall Semester. The campus safety team has been working on a protocol to help students file complaints or report incidences of bias.

SOFTBALL: Nicholson hired as new coach

Craig Nicholson has been named the head softball coach at Ball State University, replacing Terri Laux, whose contract was not renewed earlier this summer. Nicholson has coached Central Arizona College to four National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships in 1997, 1999, 2003 and 2005 plus national runner-up finishes in 1996 and 2000.

Gas leak closes McKinley

McKinley Avenue from Riverside to University avenues will remain closed untl a gas leak can be cleared up, a university police officer said. The leak was started when a dump truck working outside Burkhardt Building backed over a gas pump. Burkhardt was evacuated and the road and sidewalks were closed.

The U.S Department of Defense Dependent Schools hopes to learn from Ball State University's experience with wireless technology, one DoD official said. Don Alexander, network administration information technology chief for the Department of Defense, said his visit to Ball State was prompted by the university's reputation for being the most unwired college campus.
