While fewer students are crowding the streets of Ball State University this semester, admissions for Fall 2007 are up, which could mean more freshmen will be moving in. Ball State's population has decreased by about 500 students compared to Spring 2006, but 25 percent more students have been admitted for next year.
If the U.S. Senate passes the College Student Relief Act of 2007, college students could see the interest rates on their federal Stafford loans cut in half. According to the House of Representatives' Committee on Education and Labor's Web site, the average college student graduates with $17,500 in loan debt.
Two racketball courts at Irving Gym are temporarily blocked off after one of the windows was shattered by someone hitting it. The unidentified person was reported to have left the facilities in an ambulance. Recreation Facilities staff was unable to comment on the situation.
The number of rapes reported to University Police Department increased from two in 2005 to 13 in 2006. Robert Fey, assistant director of the Department of Public Safety, said he thought the reports increased so much in one year because Ball State University hired victim advocate Michele Cole in March.
Most Ball State University freshmen return for a second semester, according to numbers released by the Office of Enrollment. Out of the 3,692 freshmen from Fall 2006, 90.9 percent returned for Spring Semester, which is an increase from last year's 88.7 percent retention rate.
WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) - Purdue University plans to keep open a volunteer center set up to aid in the search for a missing freshman. Wade Steffey, 19, of Bloomington, was last seen early Jan. 13 after a party at the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity house on the north side of campus.
Snow fell on the Catalyst at Minnetrista Saturday night. According to Minnetrista's Web site, the Catalyst is made of 32,000 pounds of limestone, 17,000 pounds of stainless steel and 2,000 pounds of dichroic and plate glass. The structure is 26 feet in diameter and took 4,400 man hours to complete.
Last year there was a major increase in rapes reported to the university police. In 2005 there were only two possible rapes reported, but in 2006 the number jumped to 13. At first glance, it might seem like the problem is an increase in rapes on campus. A closer look shows this isn't the case, however.

Throughout Ball State University's women's basketball team 10-game winning streak, the Cardinals always seemed to be the team to respond in tight situations. On Saturday, those roles were reversed. With a little more than six minutes to play in Ball State's 77-66 loss to Ohio University, the two teams were tied at 53.
