Cold, wet weather doesn't stop march

Rain, wind and cold Saturday didn't stop more than 60 people gathering near the Ball State University Shafer Tower and marching downtown against global warming. The group included members of Students for a Sustainable Campus and Muncie residents who walked from the Shafer Tower to the front steps of the Delaware County Courthouse downtown.

THE PEANUT GALLERY: Vigilance is key to safety

The tragedy at Virginia Tech is one that will certainly raise questions about security issues on college campuses. Monday will go down as the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history and is the deadliest campus shooting since 1966. On Aug. 1, 1966, Charles Whitman climbed to the top of the clock tower at the University of Texas at Austin and killed 16 people and wounded 31 others before police officers took his life.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Ball State finishes in 6th place at Falcon Invitational

The Cardinals entered the final round of the Falcon Invitational in sixth place, 10 strokes behind the leader. They improved their standing to fifth place by the end of the day, falling short to Mid-American Conference rival University of Toledo. Toledo finished the first day in fourth place and fought its way to the top of the leaderboard on Tuesday, shooting a tournament-best round of 311.

BASEBALL: Cards to play Buckeyes

In the midst of a 3-8 skid, the Ball State University baseball team travels to The Ohio State University for a doubleheader today. Originally, Ball State (14-20, 4-8 Mid-American Conference) was only scheduled to play one game against Ohio State. It was changed to a doubleheader when yesterday's game against Huntington University was postponed due to Huntington having to make up a rained-out conference game.

SOFTBALL: Ball State University deals with sanctions

Though violations by the Ball State University softball team were not committed under the tenure of coach Craig Nicholson, he is dealing with them this season. Under former coach Terri Laux, Ball State (15-25, 6-6 Mid-American Conference) exceeded the allotted weekly practice time from 1999 to 2005, according to documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

A candlelight vigil will take place at 8:30 p.m. at "Frog Baby" fountain. The Office of the President will provide candles for attendees.

Students play childhood games

Ball State University greek members will jump rope, play four square, hula hoop and participate in other childhood games 7 p.m. at Irving Gym as part of Pi Beta Phi sorority's ninth annual Arrow Games. The sorority's week of events also included euchre and poker tournaments, a four-on-four basketball tournament and a volleyball tournament, Arrow Games chairwoman Katie Bills said.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Injury ends player's college tennis career

For one Ball State University women's tennis player, the inability to recover from a back injury has ended her collegiate tennis career. After junior Stephanie Farrar met with her doctor, Kenneth Haller of Central Indiana Orthopedics, and Casey Chambers, assistant athletic trainer, April 10, it was decided she would no longer play at the collegiate level because of a ruptured disc.

Grille damaged in fire

909 Grille is temporarily closed after a fire damaged the building early Tuesday morning. The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen where firefighters found a pot on top of a running stove, David Miller, Muncie Fire Department chief inspector, said.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals to play rescheduled game

The Ball State University men's tennis team will travel to Indiana State University in hopes of improving its 8-12 record today. The match against Indiana State (9-10) was originally scheduled for an earlier date, but because of weather was postponed. Last year when the Cardinals played the Sycamores they won 5-2.

Students get free activities, food in Spring Fling

From a regurgitating performer to free Carter's hot dogs, the Ball State University Program Board is enticing students to participate in the fourth annual Spring Fling this week. All events are free for students with Ball State ID. Jason Davies, a member of UPB, said students can participate in activities such as kickball, a water balloon toss, tag, kite flying and relay races today on LaFollette Field from 4 p.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Ball State in 6th place

The predicted 20-30 mph winds had no effect on the Falcon Invitational, however, the 40-48 mph winds all day took their toll on the women's golf team. Windy conditions prevented any individual player from breaking 80, something that four Ball State University golfers were able to accomplish at last week's tournament in Indianapolis.

BSU lacks minimum wage plan

Ball State University has no plan on how it would handle a minimum wage increase if the federal bill proposing the increase passes, university officials said. Randy Sollars, director of university budgets, said forming a plan was difficult without knowing the specifics that would change.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Three match wins move Cardinals up in national rankings

The Ball State University men's volleyball team moved up to No. 13 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II national poll released Monday. Ball State was ranked No. 15 before defeating Lewis University Wednesday, No. 6 Ohio State University Friday and Rutgers-Newark University Saturday.
