Sometimes I wonder what about life in America suggests we're always entitled to closure in life. I watched as HBO brought "The Sopranos" to an end and quite frankly, I was pleased with the way the ending played out. David Chase obviously believes open-ended conclusions mirror life and are thus preferred.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Program waits for sanctions

It could take several months for the Ball State University men's basketball program to receive its sanctions for the team's most recent NCAA violations, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said Wednesday. "Unfortunately, once we've sent the NCAA our self-report, we're really running on their timetable," Collins said.

Musical hits close to home

This year's show features a collection of 30 songs from productions such as "Chicago," "Cabaret" and "New York, New York" all written by writing duo John Kander and Fred Ebb.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Akron to add team in 2008

Starting in 2008, the Ball State University women's golf team will have more conference competition, but coach Katherine Mowat said she isn't worried about losing recruits. Akron University announced last week it will add a women's golf program starting in the 2008-09 season.

The Ball State University men's basketball coaches are in hot water with the NCAA - again. For the second time in a year, the program committed the same infraction by allowing coaches to be present during voluntary off-season workouts. Coach Ronny Thompson and the athletic department should work together to put measures in place to ensure the same violations don't occur in the future.

FOOTBALL: Lynch leaves Cards to coach at St. Joseph

Former Ball State University quarterback Joey Lynch was named the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at St. Joseph's College Tuesday. Prior to taking the new position at St. Joseph's College, Lynch was going to be a Ball State graduate assistant football coach for the upcoming season.

BSU receives $2.59 million

Lilly Endowment Inc. announced Monday Ball State University exceeded its private gift goals for an endowment program and received $2.59 million in matching money from the company. Lilly donated a total of $96.5 million to 28 Indiana colleges and universities as part of the endowment's Special Initiative to Strengthen Philanthropy for Higher Education Institutions.

Wages to increase for campus jobs

All Ball State University student employees will make at least $5.85 an hour after July 19 because of a federal minimum wage increase plan passed on May 24. The plan will increase the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour by 2009 in a three-step process. The current campus minimum wage is $5.

New coal boilers to help reduce gas emissions at BSU

The Indiana General Assembly Friday approved a $41.8 million grant to Ball State University for a project that will replace four boilers on campus. Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations at Ball State, said the General Assembly approved the money two years ago, but Ball State had to present a plan showing it could replace the boilers for a lower price than a third-party contracting company could before it could receive the money.

SummerFit program kicks off

Gov. Mitch Daniels was recognized by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Friday for his efforts to improve the health of Indiana residents through the INShape Indiana program. SummerFit, an INShape Indiana program, sends Hoosiers weekly e-mails with health and fitness guidelines coordinated by a points system.

Brady Hoke scurried around the bright new field turf of Schuemann Stadium with his whistle in hand, shouting out instructions as he taught the game of football. The only thing missing from a typical football practice were fully padded players. Instead, Hoke's audience was women from the Muncie community.

Driver's licenses see new format

A new Indiana driver's license format was introduced Friday at the BMV License Branch in Pine Valley, Ft. Wayne. BMV branches in Anderson, Connersville, Greenfield, and Liberty will introduce the new license Tuesday, and the remaining Indiana branches will begin distributing the new license in August.

New architecture dean set to begin job in early August

The College of Architecture and Planning selected Guillermo Vasquez de Velasco as its new dean. Vasquez de Velasco, who is executive associate dean and director of outreach at Texas A&M University, will take over the Ball State University position on Aug. 1.
