BRIEF: SGA seeks opinions on smoking ban

Ball State University students interested in voicing their opinions about the campus-wide smoking ban are invited to attend the Student Government Association meeting 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Room Cardinal Hall B. Advocates from both sides of the issue will provide information about their point of view on why smoking should or should not be allowed on campus, SGA Vice President Jamie Manuel said.

Ball State University's applications are at a record high, but enrollment is down because of the university's increased standards, according to university officials. Kevin Burke, director of university communications, said more applications do not translate into more enrollments.

Commuter rail would benefit Ball State students, Muncie

Ball State University students could save money on gas, not deal with interstate traffic and have more time to finish homework on a laptop. This would all be possible for students if an Indiana state legislative study finds that a rail way between Muncie and Bloomington, with stops in Anderson and Indianapolis, is feasible, said Delaware County Commissioner John Brooke.

The proposed commuter rail connecting Muncie and Bloomington would increase travel possibilities for students and residents living in areas all along the train's route. Ball State University and Indiana University students could hop on board for weekend trips to visit each other without worrying about driving cars and wasting gas.

Play addresses global issues

Ball State University's Department of Theatre and Dance will have a new production "Going to St. Ives" by Lee Blessing at 7:30 p.m. in the Art and Communication Building. The production answers the question, "In a world of black and white, where does one draw the line of gray?" Bill Jenkins, director and chairman of the Department of Theatre and Dance, said the show deals with issues that are happening today.

After opening the 2007 season at home last weekend, the Ball State University soccer team is heading to Florida for its first road trip of the season. The Cardinals (1-1) will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to play in the Florida Atlantic University Kickoff Classic this weekend.

Students trapped in elevator

Elevators in Ball State University's LaFollette Complex are working again after a group of students and visitors were trapped in an elevator for about two hours Monday night, Alan Richards, Muncie Fire Department chief, said. There were no serious injuries, although one woman was transported to the hospital with a minor case of dehydration because of the heat, he said.
