WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards suffer injuries, delays at Michigan invitational

A tough weekend on the courts at the Mid-American Conference Fall Invitational was intensified by delays in traveling home for the Ball State University women's tennis team during the weekend. The Cardinals endured an extra two hours on the return trip from Kalamazoo, Mich.

FOOTBALL: Ball State beat Western Kentucky, ranked No. 24 in nation

Playing its first-ever game as a nationally ranked program, it took 30 minutes for No. 25 Ball State University to roll Saturday before pulling away with a 24-7 win against Western Kentucky. Leaning on the running game, the Cardinals scored 17 points in the second half. The defense stepped up with another strong effort and was 58 seconds away from posting its first back-to-back shutouts since 1978.

SOCCER: Lovett hurting after weekend

This weekend proved to coach Michael Lovett that the best team does not always win. The Ball State University soccer team (7-7, 3-3 Mid-American Conference) lost a pair of 1-0 games this weekend with a double overtime loss to Bowling Green State University (9-3-3, 4-1-1 MAC) Friday and then another loss to the University of Toledo (9-4, 4-2 MAC) Sunday.

Doc's on Dill St. moves into Mo's Tavern

Students no longer have to travel the mile and a half off Ball State University's campus to get the experience of Doc's Music Hall. Doc's on Dill Street opens today at 505 N. Dill St., taking the place of Mo's Tavern. Co-owner Mike Martin said he wanted the bar to be similar the downtown location.

Judge orders vandal to teach art class

A Middlebury man who was caught vandalizing Ball State University buildings in May will use his artistic abilities as part of his sentence. On Oct. 3, Circuit Court 3 Judge Robert Barnet sentenced Thomas Owen Mast, 21, to 100 hours of community service teaching art classes at the YMCA or the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie after Mast pleaded guilty to two felony counts of institutional criminal mischief.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State survives with split

In an early-season battle for first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division on Saturday night, the Ball State University women's volleyball team lost 3-0 to Western Michigan University. With the loss to the Broncos, the Cardinals (8-12, 4-2 MAC) were bumped out of a tie for first place in the MAC West Division with Western Michigan and Central Michigan University, who are still leading the pack.

Ball State student dies after childbirth

Kirsten Reynolds had a strong passion for children, something that lasted all her life. Reynolds, 20, a junior social work major at Ball State University, died Oct. 8 after giving birth to her son, Jalen Robert. Funeral services are noon Tuesday at Allen Chapel AME Church in Indianapolis.

Central Michigan University defeated the Ball State University field hockey team 3-1 Saturday afternoon, extending the Cardinals' losing streak to a school record 10 games. The Chippewas spoiled senior day for Ball State quickly by jumping into the lead when senior midfielder Amanda Lucik scored less than three minutes into the contest.

A native to India, professor emerita of mathematical sciences Padmini Joshi came to the United States in the 1950s, but her knowledge of Indian art is something she still wants to develop. For her, Indian miniature art is something new and interesting. "I bought a book on Indian art," she said with a smile, "But I haven't had the time to read it.

Fraternity population numbers increase to 528

Although new member numbers for fraternities remain the same as last year, the male greek population as a whole has grown from 505 to 528, Ken Burger, program coordinator for Greek Life, said. Burger said fraternities are retaining more members because of some of the small changes made to recruitment.

FIELD HOCKEY: Facing the record book

If the Ball State University field hockey team needed any extra motivation to break its record-tying nine-game losing streak, it will get it Saturday when the team celebrates senior day against Central Michigan University. Though the Cardinals have two more home games after Saturday, senior day ceremonies will be held then because it is the final Saturday home game, allowing more family members to attend.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards treat preseason tournament like regular season

Regular season matches are when wins and losses really count, but once you put "conference" in the title of a tournament it doesn't matter if it's the preseason or deep into regular season play. Ball State University women's tennis coach Kathy Bull said the Ball State Invitational earlier this season was relaxed, but the Mid-American Conference Fall Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich.
