Coaches say they are unsure about necessity, success of new design

As the Ball State University coaches sat around the 10 a.m. Department of Intercollegiate Athletics meeting Tuesday, there were mixed opinions on the necessity of the athletic department's restructuring project. "I'm not sure if it was needed," said men's tennis coach Bill Richards, who has coached with the Cardinals for 36 years.

We've often pointed the finger at Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins for the shortcomings of his department. However, in the wake of recent events, the Daily News editorial board is willing to give him one last chance. President Jo Ann Gora, Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, and Collins called a press conference Tuesday and invited media from the university and Muncie to attend.

INDIANAPOLIS - An audience gazed on, entranced, as a child screamed out in pain. A 6-year-old boy filled the halls of a Baghdad hospital with his shouts of dismay as surgeons punctured a hole in his chest to drain blood from his lungs without the relief of anesthesia.

Ball State Point guard wins MAC player of the week Fresh off the best statistical week of her three-year career at Ball State, junior point guard Kiley Jarrett was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week Monday. Jarrett helped the Cardinals earn two victories this week and averaged 11 points and 9.

House bill to offer full tuition

About 300 Indiana residents may soon receive full tuition to any state school. House Bill 1249, introduced by Rep. Sheila Klinker, allows Indiana residents who entered active military duty after Sept. 10, 2001, received the Purple Heart and suffered a service-connected disability to attend a state school tuition-free, according to the Indiana General Assembly Web site.

Shouts of "rolling" and "action" cued the Chapman Project to start rocking out on the stage of John R. Emens Auditorium Saturday. The Chapman Project is a music video that was put together by Christian Guynn, the senior producer and director.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Multiple players leave team

Four players left the Ball State University women's volleyball team for undisclosed reasons. Junior Christine Kennedy, sophomore Cassie Conner, freshman Abby LaVigne and freshman Katie Gallagher will not return to the team for the 2008 season, first-year coach Dave Boos said in a press release Monday.

Vandals cause $1,500 in damages

Ball State University police are searching for three unknown suspects after they vandalized Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house and several nearby vehicles, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said. According to police reports, two members of the fraternity reported seeing the suspects break three windows of the house early Saturday.

BSU ranks in top 35% for endowments

Harvard and Yale universities tower over Ball State University with more than $20 billion in endowments, but Ball State beat out 525 schools in a recent endowment ranking. Thomas Heck, vice president for operations and treasurer of the Ball State University Foundation, said the university had about $198 million in endowments, which provide permanent financial support.

Ball State restructures athletic department

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins announced Tuesday he is reorganizing the athletics department beginning immediately. Two people, Collins and Karin Lee, who is the associate athletics director and senior woman administrator, will be in charge of the sports supervision, Collins said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Stovall co-wins Wooden Cup

After the closest vote in the history of the John Wooden Citizenship Cup required a second vote to break a tie, the landmark decision was made Thursday night to name all five 2008 amateur finalists, including Ball State University senior guard Peyton Stovall, as winners.

The Ball State University track and field team spent Friday and Saturday in Bloomington flexing its muscles with schools from across the Midwest. The Cardinals competed in the non-scoring Gladstein Invitational, which featured events consisting of a regular race and an invitational race.

Eye witnesses had different views on how many shots were fired, from where the shots were fired and what Michael McKinney was doing when he was shot by Ball State Police Officer Robert Duplain.

GYMNASTICS: Cards look ahead after loss to Kent State

Directly following a 192.975-186.875 loss, Ball State University's gymnastics team and its coaches held a team meeting for an hour and 20 minutes. The Cardinals (0-3, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) lost all four events in the competition to Kent State University Friday with the closest being the uneven parallel bars.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Missed opportunity

Ball State University came out on fire Saturday afternoon at Ohio University. However, the flame burned out in the second half and the Cardinals lost their third Mid-American Conference road game in three tries, a 61-59 decision. The Cardinals' three losses on the road in MAC play have been by a combined eight points.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Late rally seals win

Coach Joel Walton used one word to describe the Ball State University men's volleyball team's performance in game one of Friday's match: expletive. The message was well received by his players, as Ball State overcame a two-game deficit to defeat Lewis University 17-30, 27-30, 30-28, 30-25, 15-13.
