Kara Beattie and Chad Shelley joined the Army for different reasons when they were recruited in 2001. Beattie wanted to help out as an Army nurse. Shelley just wanted to grow up. Educational benefits, leadership experience and gaining new skills were also selling points for the young recruits.

Cards to participate in Think Pink Initiative

For the first time this school year, the Ball State University athletics department wants fans not to wear the school's red and white colors. The Cardinals announced Monday they will partake in the Think Pink Initiative to raise breast cancer awareness this weekend and are requesting fans wear pink at this weekend's home games.

Campus Crime Stats released

Alcohol consumption and drug use may be a larger problem on Ball State University's campus than in previous years, according to the Campus Crime Statistics released Monday. The University Police Department released the results in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure Act which requires all colleges and universities to file an annual crime report.

North Hall worker injured at work site

A construction worker was injured Monday while working on the structure of North Hall. Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, said the injury resulted from a beam that fell on the man, who was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital.

The Fagbug visited Ball State University last week as part of Erin Davies' quest to spread awareness across the country. On April 18, 2007, Davies found her car vandalized with the words "U R Gay" and "fAg" spray painted on her driver-side window and hood in response to her rainbow bumper sticker.

Ball State University women's volleyball assistant coach Hugh Hernesman vaguely remembers the first date with his wife, Stephanie. "It was probably your standard dinner, movie," Hugh Hernesman said. "First impressions - I think I was really nervous." Stephanie, a volunteer assistant coach with the team, remembers things more clearly.

CHEERLEADING: Botched move lands freshman in hospital

A Ball State University cheerleader spent a night in the hospital after she was injured at practice Sunday. Brynn Bell was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday, after her partner did not catch her properly during a coed cheerleading practice in Worthen Arena, according to a report from the Ball State University Police Department.

MEN'S GOLF: Afternoon dominance

After a two-week vacation from competitive play, the Ball State University men's golf team sprang back into action Monday in the Xavier Invitational at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio. The Cardinals are tied for sixth place out of 20 teams. In rounds one and two of the 54-hole tournament, Ball State shot a team-combined score of 572, which is 12 strokes behind first place Eastern Kentucky University.

But betta males of the aquatic variety are fierce combatants: They flaunt their ferocity to other males by ramming and nipping each other's fins. "I guess it's just male nature because they feel threatened," sophomore betta fish owner Kara Mitchell said.

Ball State worker injured at North Hall

A construction crew member at the North Hall construction site was taken away by ambulance to Ball Memorial Hospital at about 4 p.m. today. The identity of the worker and the nature of his injuries are unknown. University Police Department officers would not comment at this time.

Students wishing to vote early this year can save some gas if they go this week. Ball State University College Republicans, with the Mitch Daniels for Governor campaign, is sponsoring a van to shuttle students from campus to the Delaware County Government Center all week.
