A CLOSE SHAVE: This time of year just sucks

Fifty-six days. I don't think there will be a happier soul on campus after these next 56 days have passed. You see, 56 days from now the date will be Dec. 20. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Dec. 20 is the first official day of Winter Break. I think the problem with which I currently suffer is common among the student and even the teacher population: post-midterm stress disease.

SOCCER: BSU battles for a spot in MAC tournament

With three games remaining in the regular season, the Ball State University soccer team is looking to clinch a spot in the Mid-American Conference tournament and a possible first round home game. The Cardinals (8-7-1, 4-3-1 MAC) are tied for fifth place in the conference entering the weekend.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cards try to continue momentum from win

The Ball State University field hockey team will travel to Ohio University and Kent State University this weekend to try to capitalize on its momentum from defeating Missouri State University on Sunday. It will be the first road trip for the Cardinals since losing to the Bears four weeks ago in overtime.

Informative speaker to raise awareness

Ball State University's women's studies program invited surgical oncologist Robert Goulet to speak on campus to recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Julee Rosser, interim director of the program, said the speech is at 5:15 p.m. in AJ 175 and will focus on breast cancer awareness and prevention.

MEN'S TENNIS: International exchange

Dave Thomas is one of the four players Ball State University is sending to the Marquette Invitational this weekend. Although only a sophomore, Thomas has international playing experience in Europe, Africa, Latin America, his home country of Bermuda and now the United States.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Big weekend awaits Cards

The Ball State University women's volleyball team travels to Bowling Green State University and Miami University this weekend for two matches against perennial Mid-American Conference East Division favorites. Coach Dave Boos said he considers this weekend crucial for his Cardinals team that is 9-14 overall and 4-4 in MAC play after Tuesday's 3-0 sweep of IPFW.

FOOTBALL: The road to Ball State's perfect record

WEEK 1 vs. NORTHEASTERN SCORE 48-14 Scoring 24 points in the second quarter, Ball State beat the Football Championship Subdivision team. The Cardinals paid the Huskies $175,00 to play the game. WEEK 2 vs. NAVY SCORE 35-23 With ESPN nationally televising the game, Nate Davis threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns.

Students for a Sustainable Campus will help students save money by improving their gas mileage Friday. Co-Vice President Maggie MacNeil said SSC will be helping students in Scheumann Stadium's parking lot check their tire pressure from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday.

During the middle of the season, Annie Aiello went to coach Michael Lovett and offered to change positions. Aiello was named First Team All-Mid-American Conference and Third Team All-Great Lakes Region in 2007 as a midfielder for the Ball State University soccer team.

After a false alarm at Western Kentucky University, a Ball State University official said its emergency communications are ready should a dangerous situation arise on campus. Western Kentucky was locked down for several hours Wednesday after reports of gunmen at the Bowling Green, Ky.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Injuries force team to cancel event

Because of injuries to key members of the Ball State University women's tennis team and the overall health of the team, coach Kathy Bull decided the team would not compete in the scheduled Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Regional this weekend. Bull made the decision earlier this week not to attend the tournament.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Swimmer earns weekly conference award

Despite not winning an event in his last competition, a member of the Ball State University's men's swimming and diving team won a weekly conference award. Junior Austin Laska was named the Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday. Laska finished second in the 50-yard freestyle at the Indiana Intercollegiates meet during the weekend with a time of 21.

Karl Beeler likes to think deeply about his job in education. The individual challenges students' face and the trends that exist within students' lives, at college are issues that have always interested him. But Beeler's new position of Dean of Students at Ball State University introduces philosophy - his original degree - as something new to the education pattern that he has been in more than 30 years.
