Hoke inks 21 recruits, adds depth to program

Using its first bowl appearance since 1996 as a major selling point, Ball State football coach Brady Hoke said Wednesday he could tell last year's success paid recruiting dividends for his program. Hoke introduced 21 future Cardinal football players that comprise this year's recruiting class on Wednesday's Signing Day. The group is ranked sixth in the Mid-American Conference and 95th in Division I, according to Scout.com.

With several seats still unfilled, the Ball State University Student Government Association met Wednesday to discuss issues being worked on and yet to get started. Throughout the meeting senators urged their peers to look for constituents to join SGA so more students could be represented.

BSU expands recreational buildings

Irving Gym will undergo the first phase of a $39 million renovation, expansion and reshaping project later this semester. Thomas Morrison, associate vice president for human resources and state relations, said the new facility would be called the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Pence speaks about HIV/AIDS

Rep. Mike Pence, who serves the sixth district of Indiana, begins reauthorization of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief this week. The reauthorization will begin when the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives takes up a bill called "The Global HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008," which will continue PEPFAR and increase its funds, Pence said.

Heading into Saturday's meet against Miami University, senior swimmer Addison Del Rio said it is kind of weird. The meet is the final dual meet of the season and the final home meet of the career for Del Rio and six other members of the Ball State University swimming and diving teams.

$30,000 profit of Muncie Gras to cover future costs of event

Muncie Gras 2008 brought in about $30,000 in profits this year, which will help with the costs of future city-sponsored events, according to Cheryl Crowder, program manager of downtown development. This year's 5,000-person turnout and profit rank midway among highs of 11,000 people in attendance and lows such as last year's 2,000, she said.

Fraternity goes under review

Ball State University is investigating the allegation that Delta Tau Delta fraternity had alcohol on chapter property during the weekend, Cara Luyster, assistant director of the Office of Student Life, said. According to a press release from the Delta Tau Delta International fraternity, the university sanctioned the fraternity by not allowing alcohol on chapter property until August 2009.

Students can get free HIV/AIDS testing

Health Education, along with National Panhellenic Council, will offer free HIV/AIDS testing today in observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Health Educator Lisa Thomason said. The testing is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in L.A. Pittenger Student Center rooms 301 and 302, Thomason said.

Employee says racism continues

More than a year since filing a discrimination lawsuit against Ball State University, Maetta Vance said she continues to experience racial harassment daily. Vance, a black 19-year employee of Banquet and Catering Services, said four white coworkers and supervisors have harassed and discriminated against her in the workplace on the basis of race, and continue to do so.

A 'perfect' legacy

In the mid-1990s Sarah Doyle dominated gymnastics at Ball State University like no one had before, and 11 years after her last performance she's getting the type of induction that only the best receive. Doyle, known as Mikrut during her competition days, is one of five former Cardinal athletes that make up the 2007-08 class for the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Fraternity's review still inconclusive

Ball State University officials have not drawn any conclusions about whether Delta Tau Delta fraternity had alcohol at its house during the weekend, said Cara Luyster, assistant director of the Office of Student Life. Interfraternity Council President Cody Willis said Monday he would meet with Luyster to be briefed on the allegations Tuesday, but he could not be reached for comment.

Senior Danilo Santos' taste in Spanish music has increased his chances of winning an Academy Award. Santos, with some of his fellow telecommunications students, finished producing the university's first Spanish movie last week. The short film was produced in Spanish and English, Santos said.
