FOOTBALL: Lewis, McGarvey win player of the week

Not only did the Ball State University football team catch enough eyes to move up two spots in the newest BCS rankings, two Cardinals also caught the eyes of the Mid-American Conference this week. Running back MiQuale Lewis and kicker Ian McGarvey were selected as players of the week by the Mid-American Conference Monday for their performance against Central Michigan University.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: McDonald receives conference award

Ball State University women's basketball player Audrey McDonald was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week Monday. McDonald led the Cardinals to their first win of the season Friday against Robert Morris University by scoring 25 points and shooting 7-11 from behind the three-point line.

Number 10Ball State's athletics department will not retract tonight's game. Number 9The Cardinals' student section will be enthusiastic but won't throw things at Western Michigan receiver Jamarko Simmons. Number 8Jamarko Simmons will have a field day on Ball State's secondary, but he'd only be the second-best receiver in the MAC if Dante Love played the whole year.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals capitalize

After having a 17-point lead earlier in the second half, the Ball State University women's basketball team found itself down 60-59 to Cleveland State University in the game's final minute. Then with eight seconds left in the game, forward Emily Maggert scored with a game-winning layup, making the score 61-60 after she rebounded a missed 3-pointers by guard Porchia Green.

FOOTBALL: Cards back in top 15 of BCS standings

Despite receiving more votes in this week's Associated Press Poll, the Ball State University football team was unable to maintain its No. 14 ranking. The Cardinals dropped one spot to No. 15 in the AP Poll released Sunday afternoon. Ball State (11-0, 7-0 Mid-American Conference) received 731 votes - 17 more votes than last week - following its 31-24 road win against Central Michigan University on Wednesday.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards eliminated in MAC Tournament quarterfinals

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State University women's volleyball team ended its season Friday night with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-18) loss to Ohio University in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals. With the loss, the Cardinals ended with a 12-21 (6-11 MAC) record, an improvement from last season's 5-25 (4-12 MAC) record.

A couple days after a fire in the basement of LaFollette Complex, student stories are beginning to surface. Some residents say they slept through the blaring fire alarms until they were awakened by emergency workers. Some say they didn't hear the alarms over the music from the iPods they wore to bed.

Dodgeball tournament to benefit charity

The Ball State University Sports Administration program will be hosting a dodgeball tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday at the racquetball courts in Irving Gym. The format of the tournament is 4-on-4 double elimination and each match consists of a best-of-three set.

Three students arrested in connection with musical instrument thefts

Three Ball State University students were arrested late Wednesday on suspicion of stealing almost $16,000 worth of musical instruments from Zionsville Community High School, police said. Shawn Blankenship, John Guilliam and Jillian Smith face charges of burglary and theft - both Class C felonies with standard prison sentences of two years if convicted, according to a Zionsville Police Department report.

Fire forces students out of LaFollette

Muncie Fire Department officials were still unsure about what caused this morning's fire in the basement of LaFollette Complex, but it appears to have been the result of human error, fire department investigator David Miller said earlier this afternoon. "We know where it started in the particular room - it was a custodial break room - but at this point, we're still uncertain," Miller said.

Student trio arrested in instrument theft

Three Ball State University students were arrested late Wednesday in connection with the thefts of almost $16,000 worth of musical instruments from Zionsville Community High School. Shawn P. Blankenship, John Guilliam and Jillian Smith were taken to Boone County Jail where they were placed on $10,000 bail on charges of theft and burglary - both Class C felonies.
