Halloween will be a day filled with knife-obsessed maniacs, Lovecraftian monsters, demon beasts and slutty nurses, so being careful is a must. University Police, the Muncie Police Department and the American Red Cross give students advice on how to stay safe while having fun.

Ball Brothers gift benefits food bank

A gift from the Ball Brothers Foundation is helping a local food bank get closer to meeting its campaign goal. The organization donated $100,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana earlier this week. The food bank's goal to raise $4 million began in 2007 as part of its Move Campaign, according to a press release.

WOMEN'S VOLEYBALL: Cards face MAC leader this weekend

What a difference a month makes. A month ago the Ball State University women's volleyball team (10-13, 3-7) was starting the Mid-American Conference slate with confidence and holding very high expectations.It had no reason to even think that by Halloween it would be fifth in the MAC West, five games behind division leading Western Michigan University (16-9, 8-2), whom Ball State faces Friday night.

Ball State gives 'Extreme' scholarships

Ball State University is providing four fully-paid scholarships for the children of Andy and Heather Cowan-Brown – the family being featured on the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" episode filmed in Bunker Hill, Ind. Oct. 21-28.Andy and Heather are factory workers who have struggled to raise their four children. The children – Ryan, Trevor, Kori, and Mason – are 16, 13, 12 and 8, respectively, said Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for University Marketing and Communications.

The Student Government Association met Wednesday to discuss some of the issues around campus.The focus of the On-Campus Caucus report was the push for educating students about the campuswide smoking ban in order to reduce the number of citations.

SOCCER: Cards to end season at Miami

 The Cardinals, who have been eliminated from contention for the Mid-American Conference tournament, will play their last match of the season against the RedHawks (9-7-1, 5-4-1 MAC), and coach Michael Lovett said a win is much-needed.

Quick-stepping Irish dancers will take over John R. Emens Auditorium as they transport the audience to a mythical time in Ireland filled with Celtic music and dance. A touring production of "Lord of the Dance" will return to the Emens stage at 7:30 p.m. for the first time since 2002.

FOOTBALL: Offensive line's confidence builds after win

Left guard Michael Switzer and center Kreg Hunter made a simple promise to Ball State University's tailbacks before last Saturday's game at Eastern Michigan University.Switzer and Hunter, the veterans of the offensive line, told the running backs there would be holes against the Eagles. All they would have to do is run through them.

Ball State University students are encouraged to get a fright on Halloween night at the CarnEvil Kitchen Haunted House at the Muncie Mall. Backward Haunters is hosting the haunted house for the first time at the Muncie Mall, CarnEvil director Peter Mejia said.

Alumna opens downtown art gallery

 A Ball State University alumna is opening a new gallery in downtown Muncie focused on helping up and coming artists, particularly students. Art and Soul by Phoebe Art Gallery, owned by Phoebe Wantz, will open at 10 a.m. on Friday.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: BSU begins season admist change

Along with the splitting of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams, former co-head coaches Bob Thomas and Laura Seibold-Caudill each took a team, with Seibold-Caudill taking the reigns of the women's team, a post she held from 1979-2004 when the teams were combined. During the time of the combined teams, Seibold-Caudill was in charge of the divers while Thomas coached the swimmers.

FROM THE HOOD: Battling swine flu continuous drag throughout week

I have become a statistic: I have the swine flu. While the Health Center didn't test me for the specific strain, the doctor there informed me that the center has been running behind about 40 patients or more a week, and the bulk of them have come in with symptoms similar to that of H1N1.
