Study abroad offers spring credits during winter break

A study abroad to Southeast Asia this winter could give students three to six credits for the Spring Semester.Director of the Rinker Center Jim Coffin described the upcoming field study to Thailand and Cambodia as a "Discovery Channel trip."

SOCCER: Pair of Cardinals earn All-MAC selections

Two Ball State University soccer players have earned postseason honors for the 2009 season. Senior midfielder Megan Ridley was named to the Second Team All-Mid-American Conference and freshman goalkeeper Nicole Wood was named to the MAC All-Freshman team.

Enlightening Identity

A student slams a piece of paper down on the front desk at Elliott Hall."Who started this?" she demands."I did," replies Ryan Shanabarger from behind the desk.The paper extrapolates on the First Amendment — particularly as it pertains to religion. While Shanabarger is not entirely sure if it was posted somewhere and if so, who posted it and why, he has an idea that it might be in response to the fliers he put up in Elliott Hall on Tuesday night.His posters are a call to debate, as he says, about theism and atheism. One of the fliers equates Jesus, Allah and God to Harry Potter. But unlike Harry Potter, the poster reads, these imaginary characters are mean and divisive.

Senior Robert Wilbur wins Golden Key spelling bee

Nervous students sat in a Teachers College classroom while they waited for their names to be called. Some were there for the prizes, others were forced to attend by their friends or came for fun.In the end, senior philosophy major Robert Wilbur won the $100 first prize in the second annual Golden Key Spelling Bee, organized by the Ball State University chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society.

Third suspect arrested in connection with armed robbery at Scheumann Stadium parking lot

University Police arrested Terry Keith Waldron, 25, Friday on preliminary charges of armed robbery in connection with the armed robbery of two Ball State University students on Oct. 12 in the Scheumann Stadium parking lot.Waldron is the third Muncie resident arrested in connection with the robbery. Camron Charles Taylor, 21, and Joshua A. Broxson, 25, are already in police custody.

Teaching license reforms spark controversy

A controversial proposal made by the Indiana Department of Education to change teaching license rules has Ball State University students and professors calling for a revision.The proposal, which was made July 29, includes the elimination of some required examinations and changes to the required credit hours for elementary and secondary education teachers.

Theater alumnus hits the big time

Students hope that after graduation they will be able to meet their career dreams. While that may not always happen, for some, persistence and hard work do pay off.Ryan Woodle, a 2002 Ball State University alumnus with a bachelor's degree in acting, plays Jeffrey Carnes in "The Box," which opens nationwide Friday.

Howard Dean doesn't want young voters to become complacent with politics."It seems like you already hit your peak electing Barack Obama as president," Dean said. "Now, don't blow it."The former Vermont governor and Democratic National Committee chairman spoke at John R. Emens Auditorium on Wednesday night about how the Internet has revolutionized political campaigning, how his 50-state strategy helped to elect Barack Obama and how the youth demographic can benefit from civic involvement.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State to travel north for final road trip

For the last year and a half the state of Michigan has been running advertisements supporting tourism in the state. One slogan during this time period was "Lose yourself in Pure Michigan." That's something the Ball State University women's volleyball team (11-14, 4-8) has done all year.

Committee motions to change Fall Semester breaks

The University Education Committee approved a motion to alter the Fall Semester academic calendar by extending what is now Thanksgiving Break and eliminating what are now Fall Break and Fruesday, Laura Helms, associate dean and director of academic systems for University College, said.The motion, which was approved Tuesday, must still be approved by Faculty Council, University Senate and the Ball State University Board of Trustees in order to be implemented, she said.

The first few hundred swine flu vaccines made available to Ball State University were administered successfully Thursday. Students had to wait only about five or six minutes and nobody was turned away for lack of doses.
