550 units the goal of blood drive

Students have the opportunity help save lives this week at the Angels for Life Blood Drive. Drive organizer Kim Hiatt said the event will give Ball State University students the opportunity to give back. She said donating blood can be important for a couple of reasons.

Next freshmen reader narrowed to 4

Finalists for the Fall 2010 freshmen reader have been narrowed down to four books. Associate professor of sociology Melinda Messineo said a committee made up of 17 faculty members, students, staff of the Housing and Residence Life and members of the community will choose a book that best gives incoming freshmen a sense of what they will be experiencing.

NREM career, internship fair at noon

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management will have its ninth annual internship and career fair today. More than 15 employers, including the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Indiana Wildlife Federation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will be at the Alumni Center from noon to 4 p.m.

SGA to update bylaws

Student Government Association is in the process of rewriting its bylaws in order to make the organization more effective on campus. SGA Parliamentarian Devin Hillsdon-Smith said the bylaws won't go through an overhaul, but they will be updated. The last time they were revamped was about a decade ago, he said, and Cardinal Impact feels this will improve efficiency and effectiveness for future administrations.

Forty years after the Rev. Joseph Lowery, the keynote speaker of Unity Week, started advocating civil rights, some racial minority students still feel uncomfortable among the predominantly white community at Ball State University.

OUR VIEW: New Ball State social media policy too vague

Ball State University officials released on Tuesday a new social media policy which includes conduct guidelines for posting on Web sites including LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Myspace. However, what is the real need for a policy such as this? Many of the guidelines are overly vague, which probably leaves them open to interpretation.

Bennett defends education budget cuts

Everyone has to make some sacrifices. Tony Bennett, superintendent of public instruction, defended the above sentiment Tuesday night at the Indiana State Teacher's Association 2010 Legislative Kickoff. Teachers from around Indiana were in attendance to get answers about Gov. Mitch Daniels recent $300 million budget cuts on K-12 schools. Bennett, surrounded by worried and passionate teachers, attempted to answer questions satisfactorily.

Stu East to close after semester

Studebaker East will close in May for renovations following the end of this semester. Alan Hargrave, director of Housing and Residence Life, said the renovations will be a continuation of the plan to renew and upgrade on-campus residential facilities.

During the three-hour church sermons my family attended each week, I did word searches, simple crosswords and connect-the-dots puzzles. As a first-grader I was more patient than the average child, but hellfire-and-brimstone lectures could only captivate me so long before I retreated to the puzzle books I smuggled in with my Bible.

No school means service time for SVS

Senior telecommunications major Alivia Johnson spent the end of her three-day weekend volunteering for Ball State University's Day of Service for the third year in a row. Student Voluntary Services organized service projects for students at local agencies in need of volunteers, coordinator Celia Atkinson said.
