by Cailin Reedy Rockstar Games this morning officially confirmed development on Red Dead Redemption 2. The official announcement came after years of Internet speculation and two days of Rockstar releasing Red Dead-related images on Twitter. In July, Rockstar made Red Dead Redemption backwards compatible with the Xbox One. And last week Red Dead Revolver, the game that started the franchise, was re-released on PlayStation 4. The game’s website also promises “a brand new online multiplayer experience.” An online mode similar to GTA Online seems likely after Take-Two Interactive Software, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has secured the domain name for Red Dead Online. The official trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. The game is set for a Fall 2017 release, and is confirmed for Xbox One and PS4. Source: Rockstar Games
by Cailin Reedy Rockstar Games released an image on Twitter early Monday that may hint at a new Red Dead title. A day earlier, the company had also tweeted a picture of their logo set against a Red Dead-red background. The tweets come after years of speculation about a new game, as well as rumors about potential plots and setting. In April, a map apparently showing the upcoming game’s locations was leaked by someone reported to be “close to the development of the new Red Dead game,” according to TechRadar. A Reddit user under the username 'AnonDN1978' stated that the sequel game would be called Red Dead Redemption: Legends of the West, and that it would be set a decade before Redemption. The user stated that former NPCs Seth and Irish, a grave robber and a drunkard, would be the player characters, and a third customizable character would act as their go-between. With the most recent developments, some of these rumors seem to carry weight. The Rockstar logo photo was released Oct. 16, the day formerly rumored to be the release date of a new game. The purported leak of a new map also lends credence to the rumor of a much larger sandbox area, as well as speculation that the game would be a prequel, as no railroad tracks are marked on the map where they existed in Redemption. The latest image, released today, also visually references the recent remake of The Magnificent Seven starring Denzel Washington. And with the recent remake of Westworld as an HBO series, it looks like westerns – and potentially the Red Dead series – might be experiencing a renaissance. Source: TechRadar Images: Nerdist

Japanese technology corporation Hitachi Group announced that it has developed a speech signal processing technology that will allow for more accurate multilingual translation in noisy environments. The technology will be able to accurately recognize speech in environments with noise levels up to 70 decibels, or about as loud as the average vacuum cleaner. Hitachi says that it works by automatically removing background noise, thereby isolating the speaker’s voice.Users will also be able to translate their speech without needing to press a button, according to Phys.org. The goal was to develop an application that allowed for hands-free translation. It also runs in the cloud, taking up less storage data on users’ devices. This advance in technology points toward the growing need for translation services in tourist and business destinations such as Tokyo, where Hitachi is headquartered. The company’s main focus in developing the application is to provide technology that supports Japan’s hospitality industries.-----Source: Phys.orgImage: PRWeb
Automobile manufacturer Audi has begun adapting virtual reality video game technology as a way to make its car design more efficient. The German car company’s engineers currently use more traditional manual controllers to manipulate virtual automobiles. This is done inside a simulated workspace called the Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE).The system currently in development consists of a wearable virtual reality headset paired with a wearable device called Myo. The Myo is an armband that measures its wearer’s arm muscle activity and interprets it as data. But not all movements will be tracked by the Myo. The gesture tracker is activated by pressing the user’s thumb and middle finger together. The generated data can then be manipulated by engineers inside the CAVE interactive space and used as a way to test car concepts.“We want to make picking up and moving the components more intuitive in the future,” Katharina Kunz, Audi’s development engineer, told Dezeen Magazine. “Technologies from the gaming world are ideal for us because they are relatively inexpensive and are being developed rapidly."Audi hopes to roll out the gesture-control technology to its engineers within the next few months.-----Source: Dezeen MagazineImage: Dezeen Magazine
Maurice Woods’ goal is to help underrepresented kids. And as a Yahoo designer, web design is an important part of his life. Design allows people to make sense of and feel close to technology, he argues. So what about kids at risk of falling through the cracks? Woods’ youth organization, Inneract Project, aims to use design as a tool to help these kids.Inneract Project, based in San Francisco, offers free design learning resources for middle and high school kids. The programs consist of three main types: an eight week course for middle school students called Youth Academy; Learning Labs, studio tours, workshops and lectures; and Designed, a video series featuring designers.“Technology needs to be considerate of empathy,” Woods told TechCrunch. And for Woods, design and empathy go hand in hand. He focuses on a concept he calls “cultural context,” the notion that children learn based on the things surrounding them as they grow up.Several of Inneract Project’s programs focus on sports and music, things that Woods noticed minority children tended to be more interested in. The organization is starting up a basketball-focused program where students will design jerseys, socks and logos. “Kids in the community understand what that is,” Woods said. “They’re already in their environment and learning in their environment.”Inneract Project was founded in 2004. Since then, it’s helped hundreds of students through not only design education, but by highlighting career paths and options as well. In the future Woods hopes his organization will be able to offer more advanced classes to students, give designers chances to teach, and expand into more cities.Diversity, Woods says, is important as Inneract Project moves into other cities.“We want to always have this focus on underserved youth and communities and always have this focus on advocacy where we’re not only just teaching them but we’re actually going to where these communities are and learning about them, and asking them questions, and developing a program that’s important to them, and evolving this ecosystem of people all over the nation who are interested in giving back and who have these skills, and want to see kids succeed and get into design and tech fields.”Inneract Project will be hosting a panel called “Valuing Diversity in Design and Technology” next month in San Francisco. The panel discussion will feature BlackGirlsCode founder Kimberly Bryant, Paradigm founder Joelle Emerson, Accel Partners designer Jason Mayden, AIGA SF Diversity Chair Julio Martinez and KPCB Design Partner John Maeda, and will be moderated by Megan Dickey of TechCrunch.-----Source: TechCrunchImage: How Design
Newly created studio Crows Crows Crows has announced that it will debut its first game very soon. William Pugh, the studio’s director and co-creator/designer of The Stanley Parable, released a playable teaser on the studio’s website. The game has not yet been named. In addition to the teaser, which may contain valuable information if players are able to decode the error message in the third screen, the only other information available exists in three screenshots. The screenshots seem reminiscent of atmospheric horror games. However, if it follows the model of The Stanley Parable in terms of surprises and plot twists, players should be in for a satisfying play-through. Curious players can sign up with the Crows Crows Crows official website to hear “SECRETS and WHISPERS” from the development team. Those who sign up will also get a creepy picture of a whale, as promised on the studio’s homepage. ----- Sources: Crows Crows Crows Images: PC Gamer
Fans of the Defiance online multiplayer game don’t have to worry anymore. The game will continue exactly as before even though the Syfy Channel TV series has been cancelled. The game is the intellectual property of developer Trion Worlds. CEO Scott Hartsman admitted, “The show has always been a fantastic and interesting partner, but the two were always meant to be able to stand on their own.” Defiance was released in 2013, two weeks before its television counterpart. Both the game and TV show were set in the same universe. Each set of producers and writers included the same characters and themes. The goal was to create an immersive cross-media experience for players and viewers alike.
According to the latest Nielsen survey, Call of Duty: Black Ops III is the most anticipated game this holiday season. 98% of those surveyed said they were excited for the first-person shooter, which so far includes twelve games in five main storylines, plus spin-offs. The survey, which measured consumer anticipation of games to be released later this year, polled more than 4,800 gamers between the ages of 7 and 54. Variables such as the consumer’s interest in the product, consumer awareness of the product, and urgency to purchase the product were taken into account. Other highly anticipated multi-platform games include Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate from Ubisoft, which will be released October 23 and Fallout 4 from Bethesda Softworks, which will be released November 10. Both games scored 95% in the survey and will be launched on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The newest game in the Halo franchise, Halo 5: Guardians by 343 Industries, scored a perfect 100% anticipation rating. It will be released October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. While it may have scored higher than Black Ops III, its platform exclusivity means that Call of Duty is still the most popular multi-platform game overall. Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be available November 6 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
In most video games, death is only temporary. Such is not the case in the upcoming game Upsilon Circuit. Death means never playing it again.Upsilon Circuit, created by the studio Robot Loves Kitty, is built on an idea called “perma-permadeath.” In “permadeath”, a character doesn’t come back after he or she dies and players might forever lose that character. But in “perma-permadeath”, the player is never allowed to play they game again. The game is limited to only eight specially selected players, officially called “contestants”, at any given time. These players are divided into two teams of four that work together, fight against one another, and kill monsters to gain experience and level up characters. The players don’t get to choose how their characters level up. They don’t even get to choose their own abilities. Those choices belong to the spectators.
Irish rock band U2 is finally getting its songs in the Rockband franchise. “I Will Follow” comes from the band’s 1980 debut album Boy, while “Cedarwood Road” hails from the Songs of Innocence album, released for free to 500 million iTunes users last year. Early next month, development studio Harmonix will roll out Rock Band 4. The game will feature accessories created by Mad Catz, including a guitar, microphone and drum set. The keyboard, previously introduced in Rock Band 3 as a playable instrument, will no longer be available for play.
An exclusive look into the upcoming adventure/exploration game No Man’s Sky will be shown at the New Yorker Festival. Many of the game’s followers wonder if there is finally a release date in sight. The launch date for No Man’s Sky has been pushed back several times during production. While it had initially been slated for a specific release on the PlayStation 4 platform, creator and project leader Sean Murray stated at E3 2014 that a timed release would not be possible. Due to the game’s open world nature, according to Murray, it was impossible to complete only one section at a time. No Man's Sky's various interconnected systems would each need to advance in tandem with each other. This made for slow, but methodical, production.
