CLIMBING THE WALLS: Honors students don't all fit stereotypes

Honors students are one of the largest collective groups on campus, yet they are never heard from and are rarely featured in the news or around campus for anything honors-related. Along with approximately 1,500 other honors students at Ball State, I am sometimes portrayed as a mere character of the Honors College, instead of as who I truly am.



OUR VIEW: Working as one

The standard events of Unity Week made appearances again in 2006, from the Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast to Saturday's Miss Unity Pageant. However, the naming of a Caucasian woman for the first time as Miss Unity wasn't the only thing that made this year's Unity Week different - and more diverse - than it has ever been in the past.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Carthage nearly upsets Ball State

Ryne Hillenberg n Chief Reporter The No. 10 Ball State University men's volleyball team remained undefeated as the Carthage Redmen came to Worthen Arena Friday night for the second annual Don Shondell Active Ankle Challenge. Friday's thriller was just that, challenging, but Ball State prevailed 3-2 (28-30, 30-21, 25-30, 30-24, 15-10).


MEN'S TENNIS: Wolverines serve a defeat to BSU

Even the No. 4 doubles duo in the nation, seniors Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson, couldn't figure out a way to defeat the University of Michigan. The Ball State University tennis team struggled early in their sets against No. 48 Michigan before losing 5-2 to the Wolverines.


TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State dominates meet at Bowling Green

Ball State University's women's indoor track and field team cruised past the rest of the field Friday as they won the Bowling Green Triangular. The Cardinals won nine events on their way to out-scoring the rest of the field by 81.5 points in their first scored meet of the year.



GYMNASTICS: Cardinals lose close meet against Eastern Michigan

Silence follows the sound made by a gymnast's head hitting the floor. Luckily, that only happened once at the gymnastics meet against Eastern Michigan University on Friday. However, that one time may have been enough to cause Ball State University to lose as the Cardinals lost their Mid-American Conference matchup to Eastern Michigan by .

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards squeeze by Bowling Green

When Maurice Acker told teammate Skip Mills that the Ball State University men's basketball team couldn't lose any more, the two decided they were the ones who would have to do something about it. In the final stretch of Saturday's game against Bowling Green, Acker and Mills kept the ball in their hands and delivered basket after basket.



THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COUCH: Google threatening to monopolize media

Every day millions - if not billions - of people around the world use the Internet for work and play. More than likely, the typical Internet user comes across Google at least once in his journey around the World Wide Web. Here at Ball State University, Google is quickly becoming a best friend to the thousands of us who are studying to move up the socio-economic ladder.


MEN'S TENNIS: Police arrest player following noise citation

Ball State men's tennis player Matt Baccarani was arrested Monday morning at his apartment on the charge of disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor. According to the police report, neighbors complained about loud noises coming from Baccarani's apartment.


Faculty can choose route for accusations

When a faculty member believes a student has been academically dishonest, there are two courses of action. The faculty member could informally accuse a student of academic dishonesty, in which the faculty member and student would meet and discuss the circumstances surrounding the accusation.



Housing Expo educates, informs

As Ball State University students walked into Pruis Hall Wednesday evening, they were greeted by a barrage of apartment leasers with poster boards, pamphlets and luring gifts such as candy, pens and cookies. Students attended the Student Housing Expo in order to learn more about various apartment complexes near campus as they begin their search for a place to live next semester.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals look to stay undefeated, host Carthage

Some men's volleyball fans might say that this weekend's Don Shondell/Active Ankle Challenge won't be very challenging in the absence of Juniata College. The Ball State University men's volleyball team was scheduled to play the Juniata Eagles in the second match of the challenge, which is in its second season.


Complaints cause city to change cross time

Ball State University students returned from Winter Break to find the Scramble Light crosswalk time shortened to a five-second countdown, forcing students to, in fact, scramble across the street before the light changed. This reduced amount of time to cross the street concerned Larry Markle, director of Disabled Student Development.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State searching for answers

Junior Skip Mills is crying out for help. After Wednesday's loss to Buffalo, the seventh in a row for Ball State University, Mills said his teammates must step up in order for the team to be successful. Mills was the only Cardinal to hit a field goal in the last 13 minutes of the game against Buffalo and he's been the only consistent scorer for the team all season, averaging 19.
