'Survivor' winner shares experiences from show

"The Sexiest Winner of Survivor" stole the show Monday night with a combination of witty, humorous remarks and serious issues during his speech, "Character: The Ultimate Survival Tool" at Cardinal Hall in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Ethan Zohn, winner of "Survivor: Africa," as well as a soccer player in Zimbabwe, used his light-heartedness and charisma to show students and visitors that they do not have to win a million dollars to make a difference.


Supreme Court refuses to hear case

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court has declined without comment to review an appeal filed by former collegiate journalists at Governors State University, a public college in Illinois.

Presidential slate owes $50 in fines for code violations

Commissioners approve smoking ban

After months of controversy surrounding the issue, the Delaware County commissioners voted unanimously this morning for a countywide smoking ban. The ban prohibits smoking in public buildings except private clubs and free-standing bars. The Delaware County Board of Health already approved the ban, which will go into effect on June 21.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Starting spots open for competition

When the starting lineups are announced before Ball State University's game against Western Michigan on Wednesday, some new names may be read over the loudspeaker. After a one-point loss to Tennessee State in Saturday's Bracket Buster, coach Tim Buckley said all five starting spots are open for competition during the two practices prior to Wednesday's game.



Students learn about engineering, test robots in competition

A group of more than a dozen students from Muncie-area high schools works with mentors from ball State University and local businesses to build a robot that will compete in a competition. The team has been working on the robot since Jan. 7.

Learner pilot crashes plane outside Muncie airport

A learner pilot from Indianapolis suffered minor injuries from a Monday night airplane crash northeast of the Delaware County Airport, police said. Joseph Bruns, 29, was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital with a separated shoulder and might have to have surgery, Delaware County Sgt.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards travel to Central Michigan

As the end of the basketball season approaches, there can often be a tendency for players to get complacent with practice and games. The women's basketball team has tried to avoid falling into this trap by creating drills and incentives for good play. Ball State coach Tracy Roller created a practice drill where the players compete for a starting spot.



Slates debate issues tonight

Student Government Association presidential slates face off tonight during the Slate Debate that, for the first time, will be televised off-campus instead of just on-campus. Although the debate will have limited seating, students and community members can watch the debate off campus on channel 61 and on campus on channel 57 at 7 p.m.

The Student Government Association is doing pretty much everything it can to get you interested in this year's election. The second debate of the election process - the Slate Debate - is being televised tonight on Cardinal Vision 57 and, for the first time, off-campus cable channel 61.

LETTER: Future teachers must consider question of intelligent design

I just read an online article in the New York Times concerning the Ohio Board of Education's wise decision to jettison a recent attempt to blend science and mythology in state-funded schools. This Wednesday article, "Ohio Board Undoes Stand on Evolution" by Jodi Rudoren, reports on the board's decision to toss out its earlier mandate that would have allowed voodoo like "intelligent design" into the classroom.


Pita Pit owner postpones opening for second time

The owner of the Pita Pit, which was supposed to open March 1, has postponed the business' opening for the second time. Lucas Smelzer cited financial difficulties as the reason for the postponement. However, he said the business is back on track is set to open sometime between April 1 and April 15.


Commissioners to vote on smoking ban

The Delaware County commissioners will meet today to vote on a county-wide smoking ban. The three commissioners will vote at the 9:30 a.m. meeting in the Commissioner's Courtroom, room 309, in the County Building at 100 W. Main Street. Members of the Delaware County Board of Health and The Tobacco Free Coalition created two smoking ordinances.
