SOCCER: New coach ready for challenge

Michelle Salmon, the former coach at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, was hired Friday as Ball State University's soccer coach. She takes over for Ron Rainey, who left for the head coaching job at the University of Iowa.



Students collect money for charity

Students are collecting spare change and extra dollars today at the Scramble Light to help fight world hunger. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 10 students will ask for donations to the United Nations World Food Programme and pass out literature on the organization and world hunger.


SOFTBALL: Lack of consistent offense leads to Redhawks sweep

Sitting in fourth place in the Mid-American Conference West Division at the start of Saturday, Ball State University entered a doubleheader against Miami University knowing they needed to get wins. However, the Cardinals (12-22, 5-9 MAC) were unable to avoid the big inning against the Redhawks (19-28, 5-9) and got swept, losing game one 4-1 and game two 6-3.


Students discuss diversity with media professionals

When reporting on a story, especially a controversial one, journalists can never make everyone happy, WRTV-6 reporter Rafael Sanchez said. "Your job really, whatever you do in the field of journalism, is just to be fair," Sanchez said. "It's a very difficult balancing act, but one that must be done.



MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State clinches second straight title

For the 19th time (a Mid-American Conference record) and for the second consecutive year, the Ball State University men's tennis team won the MAC regular season title. The No. 64 Cardinals dominated the Huskies of Northern Illinois University on Saturday en route to a 7-0 victory.


Relay For Life raises $25,000 for cancer research

Sporting dresses, loud voices and nimble legs, several men ran around the Ball State University campus, the Village and the Late Nite Carnival grounds Friday night during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life's "Miss Relay" pageant. The competitors, who petitioned friends and strangers for donations, helped in raising about $25,000 for cancer research, compared with the $17,000 raised at last year's Relay for Life, said Laura Market, community development director for the American Cancer Society.

Students, faculty will walk in Relay for Life

Junior Liz Hamilton hopes Relay for Life will firmly establish itself as a staple of Ball State University's annual events this year. For the third year, Ball State and the Colleges Against Cancer will sponsor Relay for Life from 7 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m.


Collins names new women's soccer coach

Tom Collins, Ball State University's director of athletics, named Michelle Salmon to be the head women's soccer coach, according to a statement from the athletics department. Salmon is the former head coach at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and she is the second women's soccer coach at Ball State.


SOFTBALL: Cardinals split doubleheader with Indiana State

Ball State University softball coach Terri Laux had two goals for her team yesterday: to win both games of a doubleheader against Indiana State University and to get the team ready for this weekend's Mid-American Conference games against Miami University. The Cardinals (12-20, 5-7 MAC) were only able to accomplish one of these goals as they split both games of the doubleheader, winning game one 3-0 and losing a game two to the Sycamores (19-21) 4-2.


Three students search for places to live with help of family, friends

Staring up through the empty hole that used to be his apartment's ceiling, Aaron Brown stood cautiously on piles of insulation, roofing and wood that formed his home less than 24 hours ago. Brown, a fifth-year student, and his roommate Chris French, a graduate student, climbed the soot-covered stairs to their apartment Thursday afternoon to see if anything could be salvaged after a fire destroyed much of their home Wednesday night.



MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State plays for outright title

It's simple. With a win, the No. 64 Ball State University men's tennis team claims the Mid-American Conference championship outright. With a loss, the Cardinals tie for first place with the winner of the Western Michigan University and the University of Toledo match.


SGA plans, approves 2006-07 budget

While $74,000 seems like a large chunk of money to many college students, Student Government Association has planned out and approved how it is going to spend that much money for the 2006-07 academic year. The budget was approved at the Student Senate meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Late Nite Carnival to offer variety of rides

A year of successful University Program Board Late Nite events culminates tonight in Lot C1 near Irving Arena. The third annual Ball State Late Nite Carnival is set to begin at 9 p.m. and well run well into the night, ending at 1 a.m. "Late Nite at Ball State, with additional funding by Student Government Association and UPB, are essentially bringing a state fair atmosphere to Ball State's campus without the extreme costs involved," event organizer Amy Rosenquist said.
