SOFTBALL: Coach's contract not renewed for next season.

The Ball State University softball team will have a new coach at the helm to begin next season. Ball State has elected not to renew the contracts of coach Terri Laux and assistant coach Cris Lukas.-á -á Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said in a press release that he felt he had to make a personnel decision.



Center will offer fewer seminars

The Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry will offer only three seminars in the upcomming academic year for the first time since its creation in 2000. This reduction can be attributed to a change in funding, Joe Trimmer, director of the center, said.


BASEBALL: Cards win first-ever MAC Championship

KENT, Ohio -- For Kyle Dygert, the last four Mid-American Conference games of his career will never be forgotten. The senior second baseman hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put Ball State University up for good, as the Cardinals defeated Kent State University 7-4 on Saturday to claim its first-ever MAC Tournament Championship.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Thompson awards final scholarship slot

Ball State University men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson has awarded the final scholarship for next year's basketball team. Zack Garcia, a 6-foot-8-inch, 250-pound center from St. Thomas More School, signed with the Cardinals Tuesday. Garcia, who is from La Crescenta, Calif.


Hide and Seek

The first time Rod Crossland found a geocache hidden in his community, he knew it was his kind of game. About a year ago, Crossland was hanging out in downtown Muncie when a friend showed him the location of a treasure in Dave's Alley. "So I bought a GPS [global positioning system], and when my nephew got here, we had a pirate day and went geocaching," Crossland said.



MEN'S TENNIS: BSU tennis player loses first round of tournament

Ball State University tennis player Matt Baccarani lost in the first round of the men's singles tournament at the NCAA Championships. He was defeated by Clement Reix of Clemson University 6-4, 6-4. "I thought that Matt played fairly well," coach Bill Richards said.

BASEBALL: Cards win MAC opener

The Ball State University baseball team got a complete game from its ace, Ben Snyder, and defeated Western Michigan University 6-2 in the opening game of the 2006 Mid-American Conference Tournament Wednesday. Snyder gave up just two runs while striking out 10 batters, and he improved his record to 7-5.



Digital program receives awards at media festival

Students in kindergarten to high school can visit museums from Philadelphia to California without ever leaving their classrooms through an award winning program offered by Ball State University. The Electronic Field Trip program, an interactive educational experience, recently won two gold awards at the 2006 World Media Festival the program, "The Holocaust Museum Experience: Exploring Our Daily Decision Making.


TRACK: Cardinals to compete at Mideast regionals

Five members of the Ball State University track team will be competing in the 2006 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Friday and Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn. Senior Jill Scully, who was recently named the Mid-American Conference Most Outstanding Outdoor Track and Field Performer and was selected to the All-MAC First Team, will compete in the 5,000-meter run.

Immersive learning programs are at the forefront of Ball State University's attempt to redefine itself, but administrators and organizers must be sure efforts are being made to keep these programs alive. Because of a change in funding, the Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry had to cut seminars for at least the next two years.


MEN'S TENNIS: Doubles team prepares for Wednesday's NCAA Men's Tennis Championships

There's a fine line between confident and cocky. The side of the line that Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson are on is up to one's own interpretation. The duo, the No. 1 doubles team for Ball State University, qualified as one of the 32 doubles teams to participate in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, which starts Wednesday.

Two Ball State University students are in the running for a Student Academy Award, following in the footsteps of a fellow telecommunications student. Travis Hatfield and Samuel Day, both telecommunications students, will travel to Los Angeles on June 10 to find out if their short film "Perspective" will win either a gold or silver Student Academy Award in the alternative film category.


Mediasite broadcasts sources

Ball State University students staying home for the summer can now take classes as if they were still on campus thanks to new technology. The School of Extended Education, the Teleplex and the Office of Teaching and Learning Advancement have joined to offer a different form of Internet classes using Mediasite.

President Bush announced recently that he is sending National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. The troops are not there as part of a militarization of the border, but rather to help train Border Patrol agents, help erect fences, analyze intelligence, operate surveillance systems and perform other tasks to assist the border patrol officers.
