Sediment buildup in Duck Pond contaminates creek, drawing complaints from residents about Ball State's dirty water

After several days of trying, Ball State University contractors have found a way to prevent the pollution of a local creek. Cardinal Creek, the stream connected to the Duck Pond, was being polluted by pond sediment. Workers discovered the contamination during a draining that was scheduled to remove several feet of leaves, soil and other matter from the bottom of the pond.

OUR VIEW: Taking interest

There's no such thing as a free lunch - or a free education. While student loans can offer temptingly accessible funds to students with tight budgets, the high interest rates can make them difficult to pay back. So the more you borrow, the more you'll eventually owe.

THE DORK REPORT: NY Times' story center of lawsuit

"If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator." George W. Bush said that in 2000, about one month before he took office. Perhaps anyone could have dismissed that comment as a joke, albeit a grossly irresponsible one - the leader of the free world saying he wanted to be a dictator.

Nine members of the Ball State University men's golf team, led by 2006-07 seniors C.D. MEN'S BASKETBALL: Buckley settles into assistant's role at Iowa

When people are asked to leave their jobs, they often wonder what opportunity will come next. But for Tim Buckley, finding new employment was easy. Buckley was removed after six seasons as the Ball State University men's basketball coach and has since accepted a job as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa under head coach Steve Alford.

SPEAK SOFTLY: Kerry's timetable for war in Iraq won't benefit citizens, not realistic way to win

I am glad John Kerry is not the President of the United States. His ideas regarding the war in Iraq are ridiculous, even scary. The very last thing we need in Iraq is to set up a timetable for withdrawal. It is simply a recipe for disaster. Senator Kerry is pushing for a timetable for withdrawal when what we truly need to focus on is giving our troops the support they need so they can finish the job they started.

OUR VIEW: Lifelong effort to achieve long life

One thing your orientation leader never told you is that college life can lead to cancer. The pressure of classes, work and other day-to-day activities can add to peer pressure from friends to drink or smoke. These, among other, aspects of college culture can cause students to develop habits that could one day lead to cancer.

DIET WATER: Hussein makes politics worth listening to

I had no intention of writing about politics ... ever. There is a special section of the brain - scientists have come to refer to it as the "auto pilot gland" - that is specifically designed to kick in during moments of extreme boredom. It is an instinctual survival mechanism that allows adult humans to appear lucid and attentive throughout the length of bland social exchanges.

BASEBALL: Player named second team All-American

Ball State University senior first baseman Brad Miller was named to the All-American Second Team squad last week by the American Baseball Coaches Association & Rawlings. Miller is the fifth second team All-American in Ball State history and the third to receive the honor from the ABCA.

Pipe organ will sound in Sursa Music Hall Fall 2006

The music of a new pipe organ will fill Sursa Music Hall starting Fall Semester. A $1 million donation made by Mary Jane Sursa and her late husband, David Sursa, will provide a pipe organ made by Goulding and Wood, in Indianapolis. The 50-stop pipe organ will be the final touch for the university's world-class venue, Robert Kvam, dean of the College of Fine Arts, said.

Tom Collins: The Real Deal

When he was hired as director of intercollegiate athletics in November, Tom Collins said he was ready to take Ball State University athletics to the next level. He stayed true to his world, already firing two coaches in his five months at Ball State. In an interview conducted last week, Collins talks about subjects ranging from the new coaches, priority seating for men's basketball and the football stadium renovation.

MASS MEDIA CONFUSION: Coulter's arguments fail to make sense, show compassion

I don't know whether to be amused or frightened by Ann Coulter - seriously. It is clear that she's a few cards short of a full deck, a few pool balls short of a full rack, a few players short of a team, a few - well, you get the point. Despite Coulter's inability to go beyond simplistic stereotypes about liberals when speaking about complex politcal issues, she's always had an uncanny understanding of what makes liberals tick.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Former BSU player leaves coaching staff

Men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson will have one more slot to fill on his staff before the beginning of next season. Michael Bennett, who was director of basketball operations, has decided to leave the program after one season on former coach Tim Buckley's staff.
