A Pirate's Life For Me

Ahoy there, me hearties and blow me down! 'Tis the week to celebrate pirates. Tuesday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, a holiday invented by two pirate-loving friends: John Baur and Mark Summers, journalist and social worker, who invented the holiday while playing racquetball 11 years ago.



Teams continue games Sunday in mud volleyball tournament

Mud volleyball began its 19th year today with students jumping, diving and flopping in the mud-covered volleyball courts behind the Johnson Complex. The winners of the 36 teams that played today will join the rest of the total 84 teams Sunday in a bracket system of elimination from 8 a.


Village restaurant celebrates anniversary

Ten years ago, Scott Wise did everything at Scotty's Brewhouse from serving to cooking to washing dishes. While he may be at his home office in Indianapolis now, overseeing three restaurants and working on opening another, the personal touch he created still exists in his restaurants.


CROSS COUNTRY: Ball State hopes to get healthy as season begins this weekend

Tomorrow the Ball State University women's cross country team competes at the Indiana Intercollegiate invitational in Terre Haute. Chances look good for the Cardinals, who have the possibility of returning some of their injured leaders. The intercollegiate meet brings universities from across Indiana and bigger schools, such as Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame, who will compete with smaller schools like Earlham College and Depauw University.


North residence hall approved

Ball State University's Board of Trustees approves $43 million residence hall for opening in 2010.



Sororities add event focused on charity

In order to give Ball State University women an opportunity to learn more about the values of sorority life, the Panhellenic Council included an event focused on the sororities' charity work for the first time during its week-long recruitment process. Sororities undertake philanthropies so they can raise money for human welfare organizations such as Riley Children's Hospital, supporting victims of domestic violence, the Arthritis Research Foundation and Read Across America.


Yahoo! partner to speak, share advertising passion

The Internet and cable television has changed the face of mass advertising, a partner at Yahoo! said. Robert Smeriglio, who will speak today at 10 a.m. at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, said advertising to a mass audience was a lot simpler when CBS, NBC and ABC controlled the majority of media.

Life as a Ball State University commuter has never been easy.-áGetting up early, say 7 a.m., for that 8 a.m. class, is one of the hardest things in the world.-á After class, it is off to work.-áAfter work, it is either back to class or hard work studying.-áThe life of commuter seems to go round and round and round.


FOOTBALL: Ball State ready to take on Boilers in West Lafayette

After letting a 16-point lead slip away against Indiana last week, Ball State University will once again face a Big Ten Conference team Saturday. The Cardinals will travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue University at Ross-Ade Stadium, where they weren't treated kindly the last time they visited: Purdue won 59-7 in 2004.



SOCCER: Team wraps up road trip with victory against Butler

After traveling to Northwestern University on Sunday afternoon, the Ball State University soccer team thought their Thursday afternoon trip to Butler University would be smooth sailing. Indianapolis is certainly closer than a bus ride to Evanston, Ill. However, after a major car accident had delayed their arrival by more than two hours, getting focused on their match against the Bulldogs proved difficult.


Pittenger update on agenda

Ideas for a new student center have been thrown around by campus organizations like Student Government Association since the early '90s. Instead of getting a new building, the agenda for the Board of Trustees' Friday meeting includes discussing renovation of the L.


Mud volleyball extends registration

When Ball State University students dive in the mud and dress in interesting attire it means one thing: it is Mud Volleyball Tournament time. After four days of preparation, the 19th annual Mud Volleyball Tournament will begin Saturday outside of the Schmidt and Wilson Halls.



FIELD HOCKEY: Cards hopeful in Big-Ten matchup

The word individualism may not be in the vocabulary of Ball State University field hockey player Lindsay Quay. Despite being a two-time All-Mid-American Conference first team player, and having led the Cardinals in scoring for the past two years, Quay has only goal this season: for her team to win a championship.


Spam e-mail increases 616 percent

The amount of spam in Ball State University e-mail boxes is increasing, but students will have to make changes to stop it. E-mail at Ball State increased 79 percent from 2004 to 2006. However, spam has increased 616 percent between those two years, according to numbers from University Computing Services.


OUR VIEW: Focal point

In 1952 the L. A. Pittenger Student Center might have been a central location for students. In the past 54 years Ball State University, the campus and the students who attend it have changed greatly. The student center needs to change as well, and plans for a new center shouldn't be filed away.


Students design section of Indy

Instead of attending class, landscape architecture students spent the week in meetings and working with professionals from Colorado on an immersive project. Professionals from Design Workshop, a multi-national landscape architecture and urban design firm, have partnered up with Landscape Design students to design a section of Indianapolis The program's success lies at the core of the firm's ideals, Steven Spears, a firm associate and 1999 graduate of Landscape Architecture Department, said.

SUPPPORT YOUR LOCAL CYNIC: Pluto still out there even if not a planet

It's been two weeks since Pluto was kicked out of the solar system. I should say voted out, since it was a group of scientists who eventually came to the consensus that Pluto no longer was able to hack it as a planet. It kind of makes sense when you look at it in the context of today's reality show-obsessed culture.
