Beyond New Horizons

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - High winds forced NASA to scrub the launch Tuesday of an unmanned spacecraft on a nine-year, 3-billion-mile voyage to Pluto, the solar system's last unexplored planet. NASA planned to try again Wednesday to launch the New Horizons probe, although the forecast held a greater chance of thunderstorms, clouds and gusty winds that could prevent a launch.

TRAVELING RIVERSIDE BLUES: Similarity of cars decreases options for self-expression

"They're all just bubbles," declared a friend of mine, as he and I walked down Riverside Avenue. The dozens of commuter vehicles parked along the road weren't to his liking -¡- and he had a point. With their oval contours and wide backsides, rounded headlights and faux-revolutionary euro-style tail lamps, all the cars we looked at were utterly homogenous.

MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State splits weekend matches

The weekend started out smoothly for the No. 68 Ball State men's tennis squad, but ended in frustration. On Friday evening the Cardinals won a convincing 7-0 match against the IUPUI Jaguars to improve to 2-0 on the year. The Cardinals swept the Jaguars in singles and doubles, with every singles player winning in straight sets.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals climb in rank after weekend

With the first week of the young season behind them, the Ball State men's volleyball team is undefeated and had a successful weekend in Pennsylvania. The Cardinals started the "Quaker State" trip with a No. 14 (in the nation) ranking. After a convincing upset against then No.

READ IT AND WEEP: Player's stature not indicative of his skill on basketball court

The roster lists him at a generous 5 feet 8 inches and 150 pounds. I won't guess his actual height and weight, but let's just say he wouldn't stand out in a crowd of middle school students. During warm-up shooting before a game, the generally oversized shooting shirts and pants look all the more ridiculous on this tiny person.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals fall at home after scoreless stretch

Although the patented Ball State scoring drought made an appearance in Saturday's loss to Miami (OH), the Cardinals finally locked down on defense when their own offense was faltering. Instead of letting their opponent speed away on a scoring run like in their first three Mid-American Conference games, Ball State (4-8 overall, 0-4 MAC) contained Miami to only four points during the Cardinals' six-minute scoreless stretch in the first half.

YOUR TURN: Need for execution not proved by one case

"An innocent man is going to be murdered tonight," Roger Coleman said as he was strapped into the electric chair at Virginia's Greensville Correctional Center on May 20, 1992. For 13 years, his case was held up by those hoping to abolish the death penalty.

Downtown non-profit seeks new director

The director of Muncie's Downtown Development resigned last month, and the city is working to make the nonprofit organization self-sustainable after this year. End of Summer Jam and Muncie's version of Mardi Gras in March are just some events that city officials strive to make chief sources of funding.

Crowning achievement

Ball State University junior Whitney Kraus captured the Miss Ball State title Sunday night, winning the opportunity to compete at the state, and possibly national, Miss America pageants. "You never know going into a pageant," she said. "It was a complete shock.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Women earn sweep while men suffer loss

After taking a month-long hiatus from competition, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action Friday. The women's team beat the University of Illinois-Chicago (177-64) and Illinois State (169-73), while the men's team lost to UIC (139-104).

What makes a man

At first encounter Leo, who asked for his last name not to be used, looks like a typical thirty-something guy; sideburns, goatee, a little pudgy but nothing out of the ordinary. In a raspy tenor voice, he talks about the store he and his wife own, about their cats and about how he quit smoking three months ago and can't live without nicotine gum.

Muncie honors MLK Jr.

Ball State University students and Muncie residents come together to embrace the dream of unity during an annual candlelight march and service. Marchers acknowledge that the fight to overcome racism is far from over. The flickering candles during Monday night's march reminded Ball State University senior Kenny Daniels that the fight to abolish racism hasn't died. It just hasn't been as strong as it could be. "A lot of people are not aware of the things Martin Luther King tried to implement," Daniels said, recalling the incidences of racism that occurred on campus last semester.
