Ball State takes fifth in trivia competition

Ball State University's College Bowl team finished fifth out of 10 this weekend at the Regional Championship Tournament at the University of Illinois in Urbana. Team captain Steve Nawara, a senior, said Ball State was tied for fourth with Wabash College but lost the position in a tie-breaker.



MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State earns doubleheader win

With a two-week break coming up, the Cardinals didn't let their focus waiver as they swept a pair of matches on Friday at the YMCA Tennis Center to win their eighth and ninth consecutive matches. The No. 64 Cardinals breezed by Eastern Kentucky and Anderson on Friday to improve their record to 11-3 on the season.

TOLEDO, Ohio -- When Ball State University has started games slow and fallen behind early this season, the Cardinals have found ways to get back into games and challenge for wins. But in Sunday's road game against Toledo, Ball State's slow start ultimately led to a 27-point loss - the team's worst defeat of the season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State shut out by Blue Demons

Another week off may have been more beneficial. The Ball State University's women's tennis team traveled to Chicago to take on DePaul University and left with a 7-0 loss. "They hit such a heavy deep ball," coach Kathy Bull said. "We came out with a little uncertainty.


DN FUSS: Awareness week for white males would be unfair to other groups

Some white men find it necessary to have an entire week dedicated to them. Apparently, some white men feel that they have been overlooked and neglected these past years. So, I figure, why not celebrate the white male? They already dominate every other day of the year, so what's one more week? But here's the real question: Which group will have to give up its space to these men? Well, it appears that Vagina Week might be in some trouble.


GYMNASTICS: Cards score season high, finish fourth

Ball State University's gymnastics team placed fourth at the Missouri Cat Classic on Friday. Missouri earned first-place with 196.025 points. The Cardinal's total score of 187.900 is a season-high.-á Junior Jenna Tarkington also had a season-high score. She received 9.


BASEBALL: Ball State loses twice this weekend

Despite entering the ninth inning of both weekend games with the lead, the Ball State University baseball team couldn't hold on, losing 5-4 to Towson on Friday and 13-8 to Le Moyne College on Sunday. Ball State led 4-3 against Towson and 8-7 against Le Moyne entering the final inning.



SOFTBALL: Cards split opening contests

After winning their first two games on Saturday, Sunday was supposed to be the day that the team was going to open the season with a 4-0 record by sweeping the Evansville Tournament. However, the Cardinals were unable to accomplish this feat as they lost their final two games on Sunday to teams which they defeated Saturday, Mississippi (4-10) and Evansville (8-3), and finished the Evansville Tournament 2-2.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Late first-half push too much for Cardinals

The women's basketball team fell behind in the first half on the road Saturday and could never recover. Mid-American Conference West Division leader Eastern Michigan used a 16-4 run to close the first half and held on to beat Ball State University 69-58. "They were very, very physical and that affected us a lot I thought," coach Tracy Roller said.

Dear Editor, With the games having come to a close, I cannot bite my tongue any longer. For the past two weeks, I have been constantly bombarded by articles about how the United States has choked and how the Winter Olympics is boring with its lackluster events and athletes we have never heard of.


Cabaret Night serves as try-out for Spectacular

Thirteen Ball State University students gathered Thursday night in hopes of making their musical numbers part of the University Singers Spectacular. Putting weeks of practice on stage, the students performed their vocal acts for their fellow Singers members, other Ball State students and Singers director Jeffrey Carter.



SOFTBALL: Cards open season with two games

After being delayed one week due to inclement weather, the Ball State University softball team will finally open their 2006 spring schedule this weekend at the Evansville Tournament. The double round-robin tournament consists of three teams: Ball State, University of Evansville and Mississippi University, with the Cardinals scheduled to play their opening game against the Ole Miss Rebels tomorrow morning.


Commission considers standardized testing

The SATs, ACTs and other high school proficiency exams are nothing more than a memory to many college students. But similar exams will be a reality on college campuses nationwide if the Commission for the Future of Higher Education gets its way. Ball State University officials, however, question how effectively college-level standardized testing would fare compared with current university academic standards.

The Ball State University women's basketball team left Central Michigan on Wednesday with a disappointing one-point loss. Despite the defeat, Ball State has a chance to earn the No. 2 seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, meaning it would get a first-round bye.

Ball State University's gymnastics team will travel for almost eight hours on Friday to compete in the Missouri Cat Classic with Missouri, Northern Illinois and Pittsburgh. The team hopes this trip will go smoother than the traveling adventure they experienced last weekend.


MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State looks for streak

The No. 64 Ball State University men's tennis team has won seven straight matches and will look to continue its streak today at the YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals (9-3), coming off wins against Purdue and Indiana last week, have a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky University and Anderson University at 3 p.


TRACK: Cardinals to participate in indoor MAC Championships

The Ball State University's women's indoor track and field team is ready for everything that the Mid-American Conference can throw at them. This weekend they travel to Bowling Green, Ohio, to compete in the indoor MAC Championships. The Cardinals are more than convinced in their abilities in bringing home the MAC crown.
