TURNING A BLIND EYE: Juvenile offender deserves new trial

Imagine you're 16 and have spent your life being beaten by your father and molested by both parents. You've run away from home repeatedly, going to friends whose parents defend you to the police, urging they intervene. Yet the cops return you every time to your sadistic parents, saying all they're trying to do is turn you into a "good Christian.

Barhopping: Explore the bars of Muncie

Expo magazine and Daily News staff combine forces to investigate the bars of Muncie to add some variety to those monotonous Saturday barhopping nights.

OUR VIEW: Room to compete

Most Mid-American Conference schools have multi-use aquatic facilities where classes, athletic practices and community activities can take place at the same time. Ball State University has Lewellen Aquatic Center, a single-use facility. This means if the swimming and diving team practices, no one else can use the pool, Bob Thomas, co-coach for the men's and women's swimming and diving teams, said.

WHO, ME?: All anyone really needs is experience

I've recently applied for a newspaper internship at my hometown newspaper. The purpose of the internship, at least as it would seem, is to get reporting experience for a future job. One of the qualifications for the internship? You guessed it: News reporting experience.

Opening of library cafe postponed

Ball State University's Bracken Library Bookmark Cafe's opening continues to be postponed because of delays in delivery of refrigerator compression parts. The initial planning for the caf+â-¬ began in September 2005, but delays have caused the caf+â-¬'s opening to be postponed, Liz Poore, assistant director of Residence Hall and Dining Services, said.

Nearly 1,000 swimmers, including three Ball State University athletes, will compete this weekend in the U.S. Open for men's and women's swimming at Purdue University. For its third year, Kappa Delta's philanthropic Twister tournament will be held in memory of former Kappa Delta member Lindsey Arnold who died of a brain tumor in November 2005, tournament co-chair Jessica Dinkelman said.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CYNIC: Not all presidents worthy of currency

After the flops that were the Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea dollars, the Department of the Treasury needed to decide whether or not they were once again going to try to get Americans to embrace the dollar coin. It is a question to which there is no simple answer.

Building experience

Twelve students in an architecture class are creating a building with straw, a material not often associated with buildings. This unique fabrication process is common in the western states, but is not accepted yet in the Midwest, senior Dan Chase said. Students spent last semester researching the process of building a straw house, and over the summer professor Tim Gray received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, which made the construction possible.

New curriculum unlikely to start in fall

It's possible, but not likely, that the new Ball State University Core Curriculum will be implemented by Fall 2008, as subcommittees of University Senate are still discussing the changes. The University Core Curriculum for the 21st Century proposal has been under review since Sept.

A group of 15 Purdue University student protesters are left with growling stomachs as they remain in a standoff trying to convince university officials that the school's bookstore should not purchase merchandise produced in sweatshops. The protesters began a hunger strike on Nov.

TOWARD DISRESPECTFUL AUTHORITY: Veterans offer advice to new generation

Stop the war. I would like to let that sentence stand alone and leave the rest of this column blank as I think that would make quite a statement, but the editor probably would not let that happen. A previous column I wrote quoted Howard Zinn and a reader sent me an e-mail stating that Zinn lacked credibility as he was a pacifist with a "knee jerk reaction to war.

The dance of the east

The art form of belly dancing has myriad potential origins but has strong ties to the Middle East, specifically Egypt. This art form has been practiced for many centuries but only in the past decade, has it come full circle in Muncie, with Carenza's Caravan putting it on the map for central Indiana.

OUR VIEW: If you want to make a statement, make one

The Purdue University protesters are backing a good cause. Very few people support the idea of little kids in a foreign country spending hours sewing university sweatshirts. We support the idea behind the hunger protest at Purdue. The methods, however, could use some work.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ronny loses first battle against brother

John Thompson III had no mercy on his little brother, Ball State University's first year coach Ronny Thompson. The Cardinals went down early in the contest and never recovered, falling to No. 14 Georgetown University 69-54. Ball State was behind by 12 points at the half.

OUR VIEW: Muncie under the lens

When David Letterman suggested the production of "CSI: Muncie," CBS must have been inspired. Recently, the Muncie Police Department announced it would participate in the making of "Armed & Famous," a reality television show where five celebrities, including Jack Osbourne, La Toya Jackson and Erik Estrada, will be trained as Muncie police officers.
