Event stresses unity

Pictures of the first woman who died in Iraq, a Harvard professor, a gay man, a Ku Klux Klan member and a ballerina flashed on a PowerPoint. Before learning their identities, audience members described each image with one word, such as pride, innocence and strength.



Global affairs key to success

As the economy becomes more global, the importance of international experience and expertise increases for college students. "In today's competitive global economy, I can't think of many jobs that don't require people to consider global affairs," Jill McKinney, Ball State director of Study Abroad and Exchange Programs, said.


A SHOT IN THE DARK: People should not 'settle' in relationships

This holiday break was a huge eye-opener for me pertaining to loneliness and how important being in a relationship is. My discovery, you might ask? It's not important. Not remotely. Being a woman, obviously, it's a lot easier for me to speak in the terms of a girl, and in this specific example, it deals with the issues of my sex.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards streak toward eight straight wins

In Tracy Roller's first season as coach of the Ball State University women's basketball team, she led the Cardinals on an eight-game winning streak. The streak is the second longest in Ball State's 33-year history, behind only the 11 consecutive wins the Cardinals earned the year before.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals break losing streak at home

Tying a career high 16 points, including four dunks, Micah Rollin led the way as Ball State University's men's basketball team ended a six-game losing streak against Northern Illinois University 71-60 Tuesday. "My knees felt good, I got all the treatment I needed and my teammates were looking for me," Rollin said.



Displays kick off spring rush

Sorority recruitment is under way again and will be at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Cardinal halls A and B at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Jamie Jacob, vice president of recruitment, said all 11 Ball State University Panhellenic sororities will be present with displays.


OUR VIEW: Jobs, not requirements

Mitch Daniels' third State of the State address covered many topics, and some could affect Hoosier students if proposed initiatives are passed. In regards to education, Daniels proposed franchising the state lottery and using the increased revenues to spend "a billion dollars or more" on higher education.


A world away

University study abroad programs are more popular than ever in the United States. According to a study released in November from the Institute of International Education, 205,983 American students studied in other countries during the 2005-2006 school year, which is twice the number of study abroad students eight years ago.



Crash injures senior, teacher

A Ball State University department chairwoman and a senior were injured in an accident Monday night around 10 p.m. while returning from Indianapolis, according to police. Christine Shea, Department of Modern Languages and Classics chairwoman, and senior Cass Zamora were hit head-on by a Cadillac driving in the wrong lane on Highway 32 between Daleville and Yorktown, Deputy Aaron Pressnall, Yorktown police officer, said.


Students to be interns abroad

Learning in a foreign country can be difficult, but it can also be fun, and Ball State University students can benefit through study abroad and internship programs offered by the university and outside sources. Jill McKinney, Study Abroad and Exchange Programs director, said international internships through Ball State will be available for the first time this summer.


Students spend Winter Break in Asia

Visiting Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam opened the eyes of Ball State University students and faculty who participated in the Rinker Center for International Programs' field trip to Southeast Asia. "[The trip has] definitely changed me," senior Courtney Knotts said.


BSU searches for associate provost

In the continuing reorganization of administration at Ball State University, Provost Terry King is searching for an associate provost and dean of University College. The person selected will be in charge of undergraduate affairs and organization for University College, King said.



GYMNASTICS: Ball State drops first meet to OSU

The 2007 Ball State University gymnastics season kicked off Saturday at Ohio State University. Coach Lisa Simonton and her young Cardinals lost 185.175 to 193.625. This season the Cardinals have 12 true freshmen on the team, and Simonton believes that a big part of this first meet was to get the freshmen in-tune with the upperclassmen.


REVIEW: Rash wins crown

When Irvin Berlin wrote "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody," he must have been writing about Nicole Rash, who sang her way to the top of the Miss Ball State University Scholarship Pageant. While trying to mask nervous stutters and fluidly answer impromptu questions, 23 contestants competed for the title of Miss Ball State University 2007.

TURNING A BLIND EYE: Never lose hope in search for the bigger picture

On Saturday, the parents of two young boys kidnapped four years apart near St. Louis learned that hope truly does spring eternal. Ben Ownby, 13, was kidnapped less than a week ago soon after leaving his school bus. Police followed a lead on a truck seen leaving the scene and found more than they bargained for when the truck led them to a home where Ownby was being held along with 15-year-old Shawn Hornbeck.
