Even though nine of the 15 players on the women's volleyball team have never played a match in college, the team has high hopes, intensity and talent. The Ball State University women's team is tabbed to finish first in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference and opens against the Xavier Musketeers Friday night.
The first night of the Nike/Active Ankle weekend turned out to be a disappointment for the Cardinals who were shut-out at Worthen Arena, 3-0 (30-23, 31-29, 30-21) by the Xavier Musketeers. After a summer of practice and 90 minutes of preseason action against IUPUI, the Ball State University women's soccer team is ready and excited to play, coach Michelle Salmon said. "It's nice to be able to get out there and play someone else," Salmon said.
Former Ball State University professor William Kramer sat in the corner of the University Police Department, bouncing his granddaughter on his knee, waiting to thank and bid farewell to the one of the men who saved his life. Police officers Eric Perkins and Jeff Riggins administered CPR to Kramer July 13 when Kramer suffered a massive coronary after climbing into bed.
The Ball State University women's soccer team started its season off on the right foot Friday night, beating IPFW 5-1 on the road. The victory gives the Cardinals an unblemished 1-0 record to begin the year. The Cardinals got out of the gate fast, scoring 2 goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead at intermission.
In an attempt to boost attendance at Late Nite, coordinators are changing the focus for the weekly event to upper and underclassmen. After a weekend of attracting freshmen to the safety program, Late Nite plans to refocus toward the entire student body. Senior Jessica Inman, the Late Nite student director, said the group would try to bring more activities to Late Nite that juniors and seniors would be interested in.
Phase Two of the McKinley Project, which runs from the Bethel Avenue entrance of campus to the Neely-Petty intersection, continued a plan to add more landscaping to Ball State University's campus. Unlike the first phase, which was all contracted out, Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, decided to use some in-house help for the project.
Junior Bryce Garman did not know what the Pita Pit was when the restaurant moved into the Village in May. But now, Garman eats food from the establishment between three and five days a week. Garman and junior Connor Dant, a photojournalism major, started going to the Pita Pit because his friends work there, but the two students also enjoy the food at the restaurant.
WCRD, formerly a College Music Journal station, will be expanding its music library to include not only local talent but top 40 hits. "College Radio on Demand" debuts Aug. 30. "We'll be playing the stuff we grew up with," senior Brett Estes, program director, said.

The "Reel Time" film series, which was started during the 2006 Spring semester by the Museum of Art, will resume this Sunday. The first "Reel Time" film of this semester, the Japanese anime "Space Firebird," will be shown at 2:30 p.m. at the Museum of Art Recital Hall, Room 217.
Ball State's graduate school entrepreneurship program allows working professionals to continue at their job while taking classes via television. The Ground Floor Initiative, devised by Larry Cox, director of entrepreneurship, is designed to help students start their own business right after they finish their degree.
In an effort to promote unity and improve the image of Greek Life, a fraternity is clearing out land to build a new house while others are moving closer together on Riverside Avenue. Jeff Nevolo, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, said their house would have a state-of-the-art facility with classrooms, a dining room, a fitness area and better living conditions.
Unlike the six bars in the village, Wing-Out, a restaurant that opened Friday, will provide older students with a place to drink and hang out with their younger friends. Owner Gary James is in the process of obtaining a license to sell beer and wine, and said Wing-Out will be open until 4 a.
A mandatory freshman event held to address sexual assault/rape, stalking and relationship violence ended up generating a mixed response, prompting Ball State University officials to send an apology e-mail to all freshmen. Freshmen attended a SLAM! poetry performance where the poets were hired to provide a more entertaining approach to serious issues.
Jump on the bandwagon. Besides being a Facebook group with over 1,100 members, it should be the motto for the Ball State University football team this season. Who is the person driving this Oregon Trail-like covered wagon, carrying food, clothing, ammunition and spare parts, all the while hoping no one dies of dysentery? Me.
Finally, it really is starting to look like a new Ball State University. Ever since President Jo Ann Gora descended the art museum steps and declared "this is a new Ball State," I was eager to see if the promised newness would be internal, cosmetic, or a hodgepodge of both.
