OUR VIEW: G'day, mate

Steve Irwin received a 12-foot scrub python for his sixth birthday. He was chasing and catching crocodiles when he was 9. By the time Irwin was in his 20s, he was working as a trapper who moved crocodiles, according to Associated Press. Irwin's honeymoon resulted in the creation of the popular television show "Crocodile Hunter.



More than a decade of campus construction expands university

Ball State University is halfway through a decade of construction that is changing the face of campus. In 2001, students saw the completion of projects such as the Art and Journalism Building, Shafer Tower and updates to Scheumann Stadium. By 2010, Park Residence Hall, the Communication and Media Building and the updates to Irving Gym are planned for completion.


THE BOGEYMAN: Bush radio address lacks background

Our good president, George Bush the Younger, addressed the nation by radio last Saturday. He made no coherent argument; he made no case for staying in Iraq or continuing to fight in that morass; his address consisted entirely of clich+â-¬s and platitudes strung together in a grotesque caricature of rationality.


CROSS COUNTRY: BSU opens strong at Butler meet

Getting the year off to a good start was the goal and the Ball State University women's cross country team did just that. Friday, the squad competed at the Butler Open with Wright State University, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, Marian College and host Butler University.


SOCCER: Ball State returns home from disappointing Arizona tourney

Mapquest.com will tell you it's a little over 1600 miles from the Ball State University campus to Flagstaff, Arizona, the site of last weekend's LaQuinta Inn and Suites Mountain Classic. Ball State University has recently adopted a new tag line, "Education Redefined," for its promotion campaigns. The new slogan raises many interesting questions: Is it necessary for an academic institution to have a slogan similar to commercial organizations? What is the value of having a "tag line?" What is the perception of Ball State University's new tag line among its constituents? Is it wise to allocate resources of Ball State University for developing and promoting tag lines? Local hotels booked for Family Weekend

Families coming to visit for Family Weekend may be staying at hotels in other towns, as many local establishments are already booked. Family Weekend moved to Sept. 22 to 24, the same weekend as the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah and a James Dean festival in nearby Fairmont, causing lack of hotel rooms in Gas City and Muncie.


OUR VIEW: Informed community

With more changes in administration and many questions being raised, forthcoming actions from the university become vital. When the Ball State University community is not informed about what is happening within the university, rumors start. And whether they turn out to be true or not, rumors can still be detrimental.



Business, nursing majors clustered in residence halls

Nursing and business students now not only take classes together, but live, eat and study in the same residence halls. Just as journalism and telecommunications students are "clustered" in Brayton/Clevenger halls, business and nursing majors are living in the same residence halls, a change Housing and Residence hopes will improve students' education.


THE PEANUT GALLERY: Students have enough headaches without having to pay for MITS rides

The sound of loose change rattling in a pocket is a refreshing feeling for many college students as prices of education rise. Imagine the feeling of having money coupled with the despair of losing your change down a McKinley Avenue drain. The Ball State University student body might experience the latter feeling in the wake of a recent budget crunch by the Muncie Indiana Transit System.


SOCCER: BSU goes into season's second double-header

For the second consecutive week, Ball State University women's soccer team will be on the road for a weekend double-header. Friday, the Cardinals will be paired against Northern Arizona University and Sunday afternoon against Portland State University. Both games are a part of the LaQuinta Inn and Suites Mountain Classic, which is being held in Flagstaff, Arizona.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State looks for improvement

Three days of practice was enough for Ball State University women's volleyball coach Randy Litchfield to see progress in his team. "Our players knew that they were under the microscope," said Litchfield, referring to last weekend's 1-2 tournament record. "I'm watching the entire lineup closely.

Supporting their favorite team, Ball State University football fans eagerly prepared for Thursday night's season-opening contest. Cardinals fans started celebrating the new season hours before the opening kickoff, across the street from the stadium at Arby's Tailgate Town.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals fall in opening match

Sports Editor Experience ousted talent as the UW-Milwaukee Panthers defeated the Cardinal volleyball team 0-3 making for a tough beginning to the Bama Bash, the two-day tournament. Ball State University fought hard in game one by surging to an 8-1 run and grabbing the lead at 22-20.


Fraternity to hold charity concert tonight

Students still in Muncie on tonight can join Zeta Beta Tau fraternity for music and fundraising at LaFollette Field. The charity concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature the Fort Wayne band Northpointe at 8 p.m. WCRD 91.3 FM will play music from 7 p.


Freshman throws three touchdowns

Talk about making a good first impression on your fans, team and -most importantly - your coach. Freshman Nate Davis did that and more on his second collegiate pass and third snap under center. Not only did he throw a touchdown pass, but gave his team the lead and changed the momentum of the game in the process.


Admissions dean placed on leave

Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Larry Waters has been placed on leave while Ball State University restructures his department and searches for new staff, university officials said Thursday. At least two people are known to have left the department, and staff estimated half a dozen others have left in the past several months.


SUPREME NARCISSISM: Lower SAT results no reason to worry

Yup, you read it right here in this very paper. The College Board says the SAT scores are dropping; even in Indiana. Everyone is getting dumber, and the world will soon tilt off its axis as people forget how to breathe. That is, if you were to believe some of the alarmist responses to this new data from a bunch of people who feel vindicated in their opinion that young Americans are very close now to being technically classified as 'post dumb.


Wet and wild win

No theatrics were necessary for the Ball State University football team in this year's game against Eastern Michigan University. The Cardinals' offensive weapons proved to be too much for the Eagles' young defense, giving Ball State a 38-20 win in the season opener.
