Homecoming candidates strut their stuff

Pouring rain and a severe thunderstorm watch did not prevent students from supporting their homecoming king and queen candidates at the Homecoming Fashion Show Wednesday in Pruis Hall. With an approximate turn-out of 484 people, the fashion show was a success, Royalty Chairwoman Abby Ronk said.



FOOTBALL: Hoke: Davis confident in ability

Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis solidified his position as the Cardinals' starting quarterback against Northern Illinois University last Saturday. Davis was 27-of-38 for 298 yards and four touchdowns. Ball State coach Brady Hoke said he was impressed with the play of his freshman.


Senators to vote on pledge

Many universities are adopting academic pledges to give them a unifying statement, and Ball State University is joining the trend with the Student Government Association set to vote on "The Beneficence Pledge" Wednesday. The pledge promotes academic honesty and respect for other students.

Students invest in high-tech

Some Ball State University students, like others across the nation, are coming to school equipped with high-tech gadgets and technological knowledge that improve the college experience, both in and out of the classroom. The increasing amount of know-how that students possess coming into the university is affecting what is taught in classes at Ball State, Nancy Carlson, chairwoman of the Department of Telecommunications and associate professor of telecommunications, said.


'Real World' star to visit BSU tonight

"Real World: New Orleans" contestant Danny Roberts will share his experiences on the show and his relationship with his boyfriend at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Pruis Hall at Ball State University. As part of a reality-themed month of events during October, Spectrum, the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and straight alliance association at Ball State, is sponsoring events based on reality television shows such as "The Mole," the Heftiest Loser, a game played on "The Biggest Loser," and the "Real World," Zac Davis, Spectrum president, said.

MEN'S TENNIS: Epkey brothers drop second-round match

The men's tennis doubles team of Joe and Jarrod Epkey lost in the second round of competition Tuesday at the All-American Tennis Championships, coach Bill Richards said. The Ball State University duo won their first match against Benedikt Fischer and Amrit Narasimhan of the University of Memphis, 8-1.


FOOTBALL: Seiss back in hospital because of infection

Ball State University senior linebacker Brad Seiss was admitted to Ball Memorial Hospital Sunday morning after being diagnosed with a skin infection. The infection is located at a scar on his left knee, where he had ACL, MCL and meniscus surgery in May. Seiss first became sick on Friday, recording an 104-degree temperature.

Ball State evaluates core plan

Ball State University's Core Curriculum is changing to encourage students to think at a higher level and meet the needs of a 21st century education. The new curriculum, unlike the current core curriculum which takes only two or three years to complete, will span the four years or more that a student is at Ball State, Juli Eflin, chairwoman of the University Core Curriculum Task Force II, said.


MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals finish 13th overall at Xavier University

After a middle-of-the-road, 36-hole performance at the Xavier Invitational Tournament Monday, the Ball State University men's golf team continued its average play, finishing in thirteenth place overall with a combined score of 867 Tuesday morning. Host team Xavier University won the match with a score of 830 as they passed Austin Peay State University by two strokes in the final round.


Varied interpretations

What started as an idea for a rock opera has snowballed into a massive collaborative effort by several Ball State University students. More than 15 students from different academic fields such as telecommunications, music engineering technology, art and English have been working to complete a project they started last winter.

OUR VIEW: Immersive diversity

Multiculturalism and diversity are missing from the current core curriculum, according to Juli Eflin, chairwoman of the University Core Curriculum Task Force. If the proposed core curriculum will address issues of diversity, then administrators will have to craft requirements covering more than race.

This year, a couple of my friends from high school began their college careers here at Ball State University. Talking to them before their transition, they were as eager as any other incoming freshman, ready to get out of their parents' houses and begin their lives as independent members of society.
