U-Senate applications become simpler

Ball State University students interested in applying for a position on a University Senate council or committee might find the process quicker and easier because of an amendment Student Government Association passed Wednesday. SGA President Betsy Mills said the amendment eliminated the rule requiring 50 signatures on students' applications before they can be appointed to a council or committee.



SPEAK SOFTLY: Shooting has lasting impact

Monday's Virginia Tech tragedy will be one that we all recall for quite some time. Many of us here at Ball State University know somebody who goes to Virginia Tech. All of us can recognize the senseless devastation brought on by one man. We can pray for those who were injured and mourn for those who were killed.


BASEBALL: Cards begin MAC home series today

In last place for the Mid-American Conference West Division, the Ball State University baseball team begins a three-game home series against first-place Eastern Michigan University today. The Eagles are 9-1 in conference games, while the Cardinals are four games back with a 4-8 MAC record.


Man arrested in connection with assault

A Fishers man remains in Delaware County Jail after being arrested Friday in connection with an assault April 6 at Linden Place Apartments, according to jail officials. Sgt. Darrin Clark of the Muncie Police Department said Benjamin Brooks, 25, turned himself in and was arrested on probable cause.


BSU social work instructor dies

Instructor of social work Terri Scherer died Monday night from unknown health problems, friend and colleague Judi Egbert said. Scherer, was born Jan. 23, 1963, and graduated from Ball State with her bachelor's degree social work in 1997. She later became a field supervisor for the department, Egbert said.



BASEBALL: Ball State splits doubleheader

With two games at a Big Ten school's diamond, the Ball State University baseball team had work to do if it wanted to get a victory. However, the goal was not necessarily to win, coach Greg Beals said. "Our mission for today was not to win or lose but to just start playing better baseball, and we were able to do that," Beals said.


MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals want No. 2 in conference

On Saturday, the Ball State University men's tennis team (9-13 overall, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) plays its last regular season home match against Northern Illinois University (8-10 overall, 0-3 MAC). Joe and Jarrod Epkey both did not play in singles in the Cardinals' win against IPFW Wednesday.


MEN'S GOLF: Team travels to East Lansing for Fossum Taylor Made invite

After finishing second at the Marshall Invitational two weeks ago, the Ball State University men's golf team returns to action this weekend for the Fossum Taylor Made Invitational. Held at Forest Akers Golf Club in East Lansing, Mich., the 54-hole tournament will begin Saturday and conclude Sunday.


Students train for bodybuilding event

Roaring fans and tan, chiseled muscle men inspired 21-year-old Mark Niespodziany to compete against Ball State University's best-built bodies. The junior psychology major said he was in awe of the ambiance of last year's annual Mr. and Ms. Ball State Bodybuilding competition, which was sponsored by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.



TRACK: Coach still optimistic

The Ball State University women's track and field team hits the road again this weekend traveling to West Lafayette for the Dave Ranking Invitational. The Cardinals are coming off of a sixth place finish in the Miami Invitational, finishing more than 150 points behind first place Miami University.


Imbalance of Title IX at BSU

Title IX was created to provide gender equity on college campuses. In academics, athletics and overall activities for students, Title IX was passed to ensure that everyone would receive equal representation. This also applies to coaches. According to the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA) of 2005-06, Ball State University's then nine full-time female coaches made $730,757, with the average salary of $81,195.


TOWARD DISRESPECTFUL AUTHORITY: War opinions need substance

The war in Iraq has long been a strongly debated topic among many. Although I take a very strong anti-war stance on the issue, there are those who take an equally strong stance in favor of the war in Iraq. I have gathered information from the media, friends and family I have serving in the military and my own personal experiences, weighed the arguments and settled on my opinion.



FOOTBALL: Annual Cardinal-White Spring game Saturday

Ball State University coach Brady Hoke approached this year's spring practice with the mindset of a sport normally not associated with the gridiron: a marathon. As the Cardinals prepare for Saturday's Cardinal-White game, Hoke said his team needs to prepare physically and mentally for an entire season, not just a few games.


OUR VIEW: Blatant disregard

Recent national and local events prove safety is a major concern in any university environment. The horrific Virginia Tech shooting isn't comparable to anything that's ever happened at Ball State University, but that doesn't mean safety isn't an issue on our campus.


Crowd gathers for vigil in honor of Virginia Tech

Two Ball State University men's basketball players left the program according to a press release from coach Ronny Thompson Wednesday. Junior Steve Horton and sophomore Jalon Perryman left the team to pursue other opportunities, according to the press release.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals' losing streak grows to 3 games

Ball State University's men's tennis team is now on its longest losing streak of the season after a loss Tuesday against Indiana State University. The three-game deficit drops the Cardinals to 8-13 for the season. Ball State started the match by winning the doubles point but ended up falling short with a final score of 4-3 against the Sycamores.
