A man serving part of his 28-year sentence in the Hamilton County Jail will tell students the importance of avoiding a reckless lifestyle at 7 p.m. in Cardinal Hall. Brandon Robinson, 26, ran a stop sign and crashed his truck into a car, killing three people.

JUST LOOK: Voting one part of U.S. citizenship

The last midterm election in 2002 saw a voter turnout of less than 40 percent, totaling a little more than 80 million people. The 2004 election fared a little better with a 60 percent turnout. We can assume this November's election will yield a similar turnout.

OVERSHARE!: Facebook memories detract from present

Have you been tagged lately in a note on Facebook? Does the subject have something to do with memories? Have you responded, recalling those good old days of last week when you and your buddy got trashed and he lost his pants on McKinley? If so, you have experienced the latest Facebook fad, which plays on our obsessions with nostalgia and social networking.

OUR VIEW: Fall Break

Temperatures are dropping. Leaves are changing color and falling off trees. And students are scurrying to finish last minute classwork before Fall Break. Or at least they should be. It is almost Fall Break, but there are still tests to take, papers to write and classes to attend - though the motivation to do so is all but present.

Apartment fest features food, games

As the leaves change colors and the weather grows colder, Ball State University Apartments is bringing residents together to celebrate the season at Fall Fest from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Scheidler Community Center. Fall Fest is designed to promote unity and socialization within the Anthony and Scheidler apartment complexes, Sally Freistat, assistant director for University Apartments, said.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Air Jam regulations do not discriminate against groups

I am this year's Air Jam Chair on the Homecoming Steering Committee. I am writing in response to yesterday's opinion article regarding Air Jam regulations. I would like to clarify the Air Jam entry and judging procedures. Participants in Air Jam sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis and information was available at both the spring and fall information meetings this year.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Village left covered in trash after Homecoming Parade

The Homecoming Parade is a great idea and I'm happy we have it. Having said that, the parade leaves behind a great deal of trash. In fact, many of the people who are in the parade spend their time throwing candy, passing out flyers, etc. Likewise, the people who attend the parade leave behind bottles, cans, newspapers and other trash.

YOUR TURN: Air Jam regulations need closer look

I am writing in regards to some issues that have been creeping into Air Jam over my past four years at Ball State University. I am a member of Chi Omega and due to some communication issues, we were unable to participate in this year's Air Jam competition.

MEN'S GOLF: Cards place 10th after poor round

If the 49er Collegiate Classic at Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, North Carolina were 18 holes, the Ball State University men's golf team would have come away with a second place finish one stroke behind first place Charlotte University, The Cardinals shot a combined team score of 294 in the first round, but windy conditions and poor putting during the second round contributed to the Cardinals posting a 319, and ending day one of the tournament in tenth place.

GET STIFF: Academic Farce delivers laughter, high fashion

Old situations, new complications, nothing portentous or polite. Tragedy tomorrow, a comedy tonight. Yes, I am talking about Saturday night's performance of "Erratica." It had a wacky librarian, a horny ghost, a Shakespeare-obssesed writer, a bitchy publicist and a quirky translating student.

FOOTBALL: Hoke uncertain of Saturday starters

Joey Lynch started the first four games at quarterback. Nate Davis started the last four. The player lining up under center for Saturday's game at Miami (OH) University is up for grabs. In Monday's press conference, Ball State University coach Brady Hoke would not name a starter.

THE BOGEYMAN: Falsehood on war doesn't deserve trust

President Bush has, this last week, said that Iraq resembles Vietnam in more than one way. Really? Meanwhile, a senior State Department official told the TV network al-Jazeera that the United States has been arrogant and stupid in Iraq. Really? That official, Alberto Fernandez, went on to say that Iraq is "not the failure of the United States alone, but it is a disaster for the region.

After being arrested 10 days, two Ball State University freshman football players will remain in jail until their initial hearings Thursday. Brandon Houston and Eulas Taylor III were each formally charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of receiving stolen property on Friday and are still ineligible for bail, Officer Jason Roberts of the Delaware County jail said.

A grounded spirit

As a cast member in "Erratica: An Academic Farce," now running in Strother Theater, Alli Miller's brightly colored outfits are the first thing one notices about her when she walks on to the stage. Miller said she recalled always exuding such vibrancy.

OUR VIEW: Big band blowout

Emens Auditorium lost more than $30,000 on the O.A.R. concert Oct. 15. Between that show and The Strokes, Emens' total loss comes more than $70,000. The venue is struggling to find popular acts for students to support, which leaves few options for officials on a budget.

FIELD HOCKEY: Goalie named Defensive Player of the Week

Ball State University field hockey goalkeeper Caroline Lehman was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday. During the past week, Lehman posted a 1-2 record and made 34 saves in the Cardinals' three games. In addition, Lehman set a career high with 15 saves in Ball State's 1-0 overtime loss against Miami University on Sunday.
