WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Team's schedule full of tough opponents

The Ball State University women's volleyball team announced its 2007 schedule Wednesday. The Cardinals open their season Aug. 24-25, hosting the Ball State Nike/Active Challenge with matches against Maine University, Southeast Missouri State University and Ohio State University.

Parking is already an issue in the high student population areas around campus, and Muncie Sanitary District has just made it worse. Residents of the neighborhood east of New York Avenue and west of Wheeling Avenue are now required to put their trash on street curbs instead of in alleys behind their homes.

Ball State to offer two Arabic courses

Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Arabic culture with two new classes for the upcoming school year. Arabic 101 will be offered in the fall, and Arabic 102 will be offered spring 2008. Ball State University has offered Arabic in the past, but Arabic teachers are difficult to find, Chris Shea, chairwoman of the Department of Modern Languages and Classics, said.


INDY 500: 'Bittersweet' finish for Andretti Green Racing

During most of Sunday's 91st Indianapolis 500 it looked as though the winning driver would be part of the five-car Andretti Green Racing team. Though Dario Franchitti, the eventual winner of the rain-shortened event, is an Andretti Green member, the dominant car throughout the day was the green-and-white No.



All-American dreams

After failing to reach the NCAA Championships last June, Ball State University hurdler Amber Williams will travel to Sacramento, Calif., to participate in this year's event. Williams qualified this past Saturday in Columbia, Mo., at the regional meet in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in a school-record 13.

Another May has come and gone in the great state of Indiana and that means another Indianapolis 500 is in the books. For many reasons, the greatness that is the Indianapolis 500 makes so many Hoosiers proud of our state. Once every year Indiana has this opportunity to shine on the world's stage.


Trash pickup now on curb

Hundreds of students living in the neighborhood east of New York Avenue and west of Wheeling Avenue are now required to put their trash on the street curb instead of the alley, where trash is placed in all other campus area neighborhoods. Junior Janelle Cochard, who lives in the affected neighborhood, said having her trash picked up at the curb hasn't been an inconvenience to her or her roommates, but it might become one in the fall when more students populate the area.


Cardinal Greenway to host 5K run, walk

Muncie community members can celebrate National Trails Day at the annual Cardinal Greenway 5K run and walk event, which is held the first Saturday of every June. "We thought it was just a natural fit to use the Greenway for the event," Angel Silvers, administrative coordinator for the Greenway, said.



ATHLETICS: MAC's Jacoby and Reese awards announced

The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday Ball State University finished 10th in the Reese standings and fifth in the Jacoby standings. The Reese and Jacoby are annual trophies the MAC gives to one of 12 schools with the best overall athletic performance each school year.


Radio Disney artist to perform in Muncie

This weekend the Minnetrista Cultural Center kicks off its summer events, including the Summerstage Concert Series. The festivities begin with the Garden Fair's outdoor cooking demonstration, "Cooking in the Courtyard" from 6-8 p.m. on Friday. Chefs from the American Culinary Federation will instruct guests on cooking with herbs and wine.


BUCKLEY: Former coach's arbitration date set for July

Former Ball State University men's basketball coach Tim Buckley's arbitration against the university has found a date. Beginning July 30th at 1 p.m. Floyd Weatherspoon of American Arbitration Association (AAA) will hear both sides and decide how much, if any, will be awarded to Buckley.



Teaching couple to leave BSU

Two award-winning faculty members say they will leave Ball State University in July, but neither have formally resigned. Bob Papper, professor of telecommunications, and his wife, Carole Papper, professor of English, will both take teaching positions at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.

FOOTBALL: Hoke to host clinic for women June 9

The Ball State University football team announced Wednesday it will host its first-ever Women's Football Academy. Coach Hoke and his coaching staff will run the one-day, six-hour camp June 9 at Scheumann Stadium. The camp costs $30 and all proceeds will go towards the Ball Memorial Hospital Cancer Center.


TRACK AND FIELD: Team set for NCAA regionals

Six runners from the Ball State University women's track and field team will travel to the NCAA Mideast regional championships this weekend in Columbus, Mo. Coach Randy Heisler said the competition will be strong. "It's the strongest regional meet in the country," Heisler said.

Like nearly every man living in central Indiana, The Greatest Spectacle of Racing was embedded in his Hoosier upbringing.
