BSU students enroll in more online classes

Students are taking more online classes at Ball State University and across the country because of increased convenience, flexibility and number of courses offered. The number of students taking online classes is increasing because more people have access to the Internet, Jeff Seaman, chief information officer and survey director for The Sloan Consortium, said.

FOOTBALL: Cards complete season with win

In a season filled with heightened expectations, Ball State University waited until its last four games to live up to them. But the Cardinals ended the 2006 season with a bang, defeating Kent State University 30-6 Friday. Ball State won its final three conference games - finishing 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference - and gave No.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State loses three games in tournament

The return of Skip Mills and Chris Ames to Ball State University's men's basketball team's lineup Friday and Saturday couldn't spark the misfiring Cardinals to a victory. Even with the two seniors returning to the lineup, the Cardinals fell to Kansas University and Western Kentucky University on back-to-back nights as they dropped three games in five days over Thanksgiving Break.

Tax plan to support uninsured

Gov. Mitch Daniels said he wants a healthier state and his proposed 25-cent tax increase on cigarettes is just one way he plans to protect young adults from the dangers of smoking, increase immunization rates among children and provide health care for uninsured Hoosiers.

A SHOT IN THE DARK: Speaking your mind to put yourself in power is inappropriate, immature

We are raised to follow a few golden rules. As children, we either want to raise hell or win gold stars, but whether we use them or not we learn and know these rules and probably still can recite them. I feel like I learned "treat others the way you want to be treated" before I could read, but I am afraid to say that this article is not based on that specific deed.

FOOTBALL: Ball State defeats Kent State

Larry Bostic ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns as Ball State University defeated Kent State University 30-6 in its regular season finale. Nate Davis threw for 268 yards and a touchdown in aiding the Cardinals to their victory. Three second quarter touchdowns put the game away for Ball State.

OUR VIEW: Proactive behavior

If Gov. Mitch Daniels' proposed 25-cent tax increase on the price of cigarettes goes into effect, it will cost someone $1.75 more each week and $91.25 more in a year if he smokes one pack a day. This money would go to smoking reduction programs, child immunizations and less expensive health care for the uninsured.

JUST LISTEN: Know your enemy before lobbing a pie

When Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation came to speak on campus a few years ago, the opposition passed out cheeseburgers in protest. When the speaking event concluded, they met with the author to discuss their differences. No one chucked a cheeseburger in his face.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State tops IPFW in Thanksgiving tourney

The Ball State University women's basketball team defeated IPFW in the championship game of the BSU Credit Union Thanksgiving Tournament 73-62 Sunday afternoon. The win enabled the Cardinals to capture their second consecutive tournament title. Daniels proposes increased cigarette tax

Gov. Mitch Daniels is proposing a 25-cent tax increase on cigarettes, he announced during a press conference today at Ball Memorial Hospital. Increased cigarette prices will help provide protective and preventive healthcare to uninsured Indiana families, he said.

A geek's paradise

The cluster computing research lab is a giant sandbox for technology geeks, Fred Kitchens, Ball State University associate professor of management, said. The lab is a collection of older computers donated by companies that students can use to experiment with their ideas, Kitchens said.

Make your music the way you want

Fifteen years ago, albums were recorded in studios with big budgets and cumbersome analog equipment. Independent bands that put their sounds to tape dropped big bucks on limited studio time and often had to settle for unsatisfying takes. Ball State University student Frank Reber experienced the rigors of studio recording firsthand, when his band, Charlie Don't Surf, recorded its first album, "kvalitetssoey" at the Ball State Music Engineering Technology Studios.

While away for Thanksgiving break keep your home safe from burglary

Ball State University students need to secure their houses and apartments during Thanksgiving and Winter breaks because burglary attempts spike during those times, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said. The University Police Department will increase the number of patrols on campus and will use different patrol tactics to try and combat the expected increase, Burton said.

DON'T TAKE THIS TOO SERIOUSLY: Exaggeration is fun within boundaries

In my days as a student, especially in years beyond 8th grade when fellow peers started to develop a sense of sarcasm, I've noticed an abundance of overexaggerating. Now, I know people are only trying to be humorous and clever when they say something along the lines of, "I'd rather carve out my eyes with a rusty spoon than take this 10-point quiz," but really, that's taking it a little too far.

The men of Phi Delta Theta fraternity put themselves on the auction block, strutting their stuff and showing their talents, to raise money for the fraternity. Phi Delta Theta sponsored a date auction called Desperate Housemen Friday at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center and raised about $200 that will be used by the fraternity throughout the year.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: MAC tournament ends with loss to BGSU

On Friday, the Cardinals played in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference tournament at Toledo, Ohio against the No. 3 seeded Bowling Green University. Bowling Green won in three games with scores of 11-30, 26-30, 16-30. "This team just wasn't ready to play that kind of match," coach Randy Litchfield said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State Cardinals look to continue winning streak without two seniors

As the Ball State University men's basketball team heads into the third contest of the season and the second round of the Las Vegas, the Cardinals are in need of players who will step up. The Cardinals (2-0) are likely to be without senior Skip Mills and will continue to be without the services of senior Chris Ames, Coach Ronny Thompson said following Sunday's victory.

OUR VIEW: Word choice

Derogatory words are not strangers to our vocabulary. We've said before in this forum that words such as "gay" and "retarded" are too often abused in everyday speech. Moreover, a quick listen to contemporary music shows that other racial slurs have not yet left the word bank of popular culture.
