The Ball State Daily News editorial board does not support a campus-wide smoking ban. That, however, does not mean everyone supports smoking. Here's the breakdown: 18 out of 19 editorial board members voted against the ban at a Wednesday night meeting. Out of those 19 voters, three smoke about three packs a week, one smokes approximately a cigarette a day and one quit less than a week ago.
The elevator that trapped more than 16 Ball State University students Tuesday night was caused by overcrowding, not a mechanical error, Alan Hargrave, director of housing and residence life, said. "The people who overloaded the elevator, that was the problem," Hargrave said.
A member of Ball State University's men's basketball team was arrested over the weekend. Kevin Ford, a junior who transferred to Ball State from Southern Idaho, was arrested for public intoxication Sunday. Ford, who spent his freshman year at New Mexico State University before transferring to Southern Idaho University, was recruited to play at Ball State by Ronny Thompson and stayed after Thompson resigned and was replaced by Billy Taylor.
More than 6,600 Ball State University students voted on the campus-wide smoking ban referendum. That is about 2,500 more votes cast than for last year's Student Government Association elections. Senators and about 30 students gathered in front of the Art and Journalism Building to hear the results of whether Ball State should become a smoke-free campus or continue its current policies on smoking.

In response to Student Government Association's online poll of students, 4,413 students voted for a smoke-free campus. There were 2,486 votes in support of keeping smoking regulations the same.

On Friday, Congress voted to approve the College Cost Reduction Act, making President Bush's signature the last barrier to the legislation. If approved, the act would provide an increase in money to students in need of federal financial aid, Robert Zellers, director of scholarships and financial aid, said.

Ball State University's Cooper Science Building is open Wednesday after a chemical spill forced students and faculty to evacuate on Tuesday. Media Relations Manager Marc Ransford said it was minor spill. Nobody was injured and there was no damage, he said.

An elevator got stuck in the Studebaker West Complex shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to Liz Alberding, a Palmer/Davidson desk staff member. Students were trapped in the elevator for about 20 minutes before being rescued by firefighters, said freshmen Evan Hauser and Ryan LeVeque.
Although they look barren and sparse now, by the end of the month Minnetrista Cultural Center's mini-orchard will be ripe with apples. A small orchard comprised of approximately 10 apple trees occupies an area near a gift shop on the center's grounds, said Visitor Services Assistant Lisa Nicklas.
The Student Government Association will sponsor its first Political Speaker Series 7 p.m. Wednesday at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. SGA Treasurer Zac Davis said the year-long series would bring Indiana politicians to campus to speak about how Ball State University students can get involved with local politics.
Two Ball State University women's soccer players were named to the Florida Atlantic University Kickoff Classic All-Tournament team Tuesday. Juniors Annie Aiello and Katelyn Alexander received the honor for their play in the weekend tournament, in which Ball State (2-2) finished 1-1.
