SOCCER: Cards avenge '06 MAC losses

There was Charlie Cardinal, the Pride of Mid-America marching band, screaming fans and tackles, but it was not a Ball State University football game; it was Ball State f+â-¦tbol. The Ball State soccer team (5-4, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) celebrated its 2006 MAC championship Sunday in front of a record number of fans, 759, including President Jo Ann Gora and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins.



MEN'S TENNIS: Players compete in national competition

Going into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Qualifying and Pre-qualifying Tournament Saturday, senior Jarrod Epkey gave junior Jose Perdomo one piece of advice. "Do your thing, just play tennis," he said. Perdomo made it into the fourth round, before losing to University of Arizona senior Bruno Alcala, 6-3 7-6(3).


Doc's donates bar sales to Late Loop

Doc's Music Hall is donating 10 percent of its bar sales after 10 p.m. this Thursday and next Thursday in order to raise money for the Late Loop trolley. Doc's owner Mike Martin said local musician Derek Jones will play and there is no cover charge for the event.


WOMEN'S TENNIS: BSU hosts tourney at brand new facility

After weeks of practice, the Ball State University women's tennis team will finally be able to host a competition at its newly-renovated facility. The Ball State Fall Invitational takes place today and Saturday at the reopened Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, with additional matches being held at Northside Middle School.


Chaplain speaks against Guantanamo Bay

James "Yusuf" Yee, a former U.S. Army Muslim chaplain at Guantanamo Bay Detainment Camp in Cuba, said he hopes that after hearing his story, people are inspired to protect civil rights in the United States. Yee, a third-generation Asian-American and Muslim convert, said he was wrongly accused of espionage and kept in solitary confinement for 76 days.



FIELD HOCKEY: Cards look for first MAC win

After three Mid-American Conference home games ended in one-goal defeats, two of them with a goal that abruptly ended the game, Ball State University had a week to collect itself and prepare. At the end of all that preparation, the Cardinals get to match up with Central Michigan University, who defeated Michigan State University Wednesday, the fifth-ranked team in the country.

Running back Lewis out for rest of season after tearing his ACL

Ball State University's sophomore running back MiQuale Lewis' season has ended prematurely because of an injury for a second year in a row, Cardinals' football coach Brady Hoke said Thursday. The results of an MRI Lewis underwent Wednesday morning showed he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.


GMAC scholarship to be given at game

A few Ball State University students will compete during half-time at Saturday's football game to win a scholarship and a chance to win a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu from GMAC Financial Services. Five students will participate in the competition, which involves putting on football equipment.



45 students showcase costumes

Harry Potter was there. Superman attended. The crowd even got a glimpse of Marilyn Monroe. The 2007 Ball State Homecoming Royalty Fashion Show, held in Pruis Hall, showcased quite a mixture of royalty candidates dressed in their very best. All 45 royalty candidate pairs took the stage in matching costumes, including pairs such as Schmidt and Wilson Hall representatives Tarrah Troyer and Drew Beringer who dressed as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, complete with all of the kids in tow.


Students have chance to win car

GMAC Financial Services and Ball State University is sponsoring a giveaway for a student to win a $1,000 scholarship. Chris Taylor, director of Athletics, Communication and Marketing, said students who sign up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Scramble Light will receive a wrist band.


Ball State to launch new site

When the new Ball State University Web site starts running Oct. 1 students can expect to see more pictures, graphics and other more flexible applications than the current site has. University Web Coordinator Nancy Prater said the new Web site is visually more modern and reflects where Ball State is heading in the future.


FOOTBALL: Bittersweet return

Each Sunday, the Ball State University football team meets at the John W. and Janice B. Fisher Football Training Complex to give out its weekly awards and put a close to the week that came before it. After a 41-40 loss last week at the University of Nebraska, Cardinals' coach Brady Hoke said it was even more important for his team to focus on its next opponent.



WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: School record losing streak snapped at 13

After 13 consecutive losses, the Ball State University women's volleyball team ended the streak 34 days after it started with a 3-2 (30-28, 20-30, 30-22, 27-30, 19-17) victory against the University of Toledo. The win makes the Cardinals 2-13 on the season and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Away match to feature battle of winless teams

Two games into the Mid-American Conference season the Ball State University women's volleyball team is yet to pick up its first win. However, they play another team who is 0-2 in the MAC as the Cardinals travel to Toledo University for a match against the Rockets tonight.


Blood drive needs donors, volunteers

Ball State University students can donate blood from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom. Student Government Association Treasurer Zac Davis said SGA was sponsoring and supporting the American Red Cross blood drive. The goal was to get at least 75 students to donate, he said.


Money to be directly deposited

Ball State University students who have on-campus jobs will need to set up direct-deposit accounts in order to be paid. Marie Kavanagh, director of payroll and employee benefits, said it is not mandatory to have a direct-deposit account at this time, but payroll will require students to set one up in the future.


Executive assistant to step down

The administrator who led the project that earned Ball State University the title of No. 1 wireless campus in the nation announced Thursday that he will step down from his position. O'Neal Smitherman, executive assistant for President Jo Ann Gora and vice president for Information Technology, said after working at Ball State since 2001 his last day will be Nov.


OUR VIEW: FAN-tastic

Get to bed early tonight, Cardinals fans. Saturday's going to be a big day with the football team playing at home for the first time since the season opener. And what a great season it's been so far. The team is 2-2, but both loses were by only one point, instead of the 30-point massacres of previous seasons.
